Aside from the infinitely better songwriting Quo Live! also doesn't feature the unlovely bellowing of Steve Marriott

Mark Lamarr had an interesting Twitter thread on Status Quo recently: https://twitter.com/lamarr_mark/status/ ... 9300225024

"Saw a fascinating talking point from two Americans earlier. Why were the British music press so endlessly sniffy about Status Quo but so reverential to the Ramones ?"

Come on Carlson! Even you, with your limited understanding of what's really rock 'n roll, knows that Johnny belongs in the top 10 of best guitarists of all time ;-).

70s rock band. Long Hair, denim, leather. No capes or pointy hats.

I'm pretty generous with my love for Quo and go all the way to 1980 with the Just Supposin' album, and maybe even the one after that - Never Too Late in 1981 - basically up till drummer John Coghlan left the band. Their prime years are certainly Piledriver to Blue For You but the albums immediately either side of that period are very fine too. There is a definite lull in quality with If You Cant Stand the Heat and Whatever You Want although the singles are reliably good. Just Supposin' is a notch higher than those two and is an album I still enjoy a lot. With 4 hits and some solid album cuts it stands up pretty well. Never Too Late sounds like left overs from that album (which it basically was) but it manages to include 2 or 3 strong tracks and non of their albums are perfect anyway but there's more than enough on most of them I enjoy.

Quo, Hello and Piledriver would be my top 3 but Dog of Two Head and Rockin' All Over The World may well round out my top 5 ahead of other more obvious picks like On The Level and Blue For You.

Something I Learnt Today, courtesy Wikipedia: the title "Pictures Of Matchstick Men" referred to "the paintings of Salford artist L. S. Lowry."

He developed a distinctive style of painting and is best known for his urban landscapes peopled with human figures, often referred to as "matchstick men".

Side note: Lowry holds the record for rejecting British honours (five), including a knighthood (1968). (Same year as the Quo record. Coincidence?)
