It really shows Flanagan’s greatness to play on such a knuckle buster. I am remembering correctly that Tommy played it once and refused a second take? I may be misremembering.

What wonderful music
Possibly my fave Coltrane album....
.
Too many top albums to have one favourite. Of late I've been playing Afro Blue Impressions most, but My Favourite Things, Ballads and with Duke Ellington are in regular rotation too.

Pure Coltrane.
Resisting the temptation to add another horn, yet filling all available space with his sound when his vision requires it.
You can hear why so many youngsters have heard this down the ages and thought 'I want to play THAT instument and THIS music!'
It is also worth reflecting that JC went from these pyrotechnics to music of great beauty, fragility, mingled with dissonance in a few short years after this album.

I have played all three in the past few weeks, by coincidence. The Duke Ellington album was not one I knew at all, indeed I was rather surprised to find I had a copy.
I am a bit like that these days. No baby chasing a greenback underwater or woman walking her jaguar at night while her chauffeur smirks on the cover, and I have a hard time registering the purchase.

His artistic growth and his questing spirit were exceptional.

Tommy Flanagan can be so unassuming at times but he’ s always there with his support. He’s never played with pyrotechnics but he someone needs to hold things together!

You know John, today or was it yesterday, I played sides 1 and 2 of Seconds Out and listening to the track Lamb Lies Down made me realise that because I disliked that specific track it might just might influence my view a little on the album which I have never rated.
Now, what's the relevance of this? Well I can't stand the original Sound of Music My Favourite Things - I
Should I lie down on the couch....?

Me too - I've had to resort to keeping a small list with my cards for a few artists (mainly classical) to remind me of what I've got. Was hesitating today over a Vaughn Williams CD - turned out I did have the work, though not by that orchestra & conductor.

Stunningly fluent playing from Coltrane with the rest of the band doing their bit and as tight as a duck's ass/arse
Majestic and full of music
