The Human League!
You come at the Queen, you best not miss.

Re: The Great Synth Bands of the 1980s
Dare is one of the greatest albums ever made to my old ears but outside of that I found them inconsistent.
Ultravox would be a contender but my vote would probably go to OMD.
Those two bands I saw live a few times each.
Full of [synth] music
[Do Japan count...?]

Is the correct answer.
Both Mk1 and Mk2 were fantastic.
Yahoo or Soft Cell for the synth duo prize.
Give a shit or be a shit.

No, Depeche Mode is the most enduring of the great synth bands of the 1980s, pay attention!

They started in the 70s (another advantage they have over most others) but my vote goes to the ones who were playful rather than self-consciously 'futuristic'. That would be the one and only Silicon Teens, of course.

I would pick OMD. I own some of their albums, but only comps from New Order and the Human League
I have seen all three live, and although HL have higher highs, OMD are more consistent. New Order come a decent third.
Joan of Arc and Talking loud and clear are among my all time fave tracks.

I meant no 80's synth bands.
Those from the 70's, now that's another matter.

Soft Cell for duos

Soft Cell are hard to argue against. But really I’d find it impossible to go beyond DAF.

The Pet Shop Boys.... brilliant tunes, brilliant lyrics. Soft Cell second. OMD? Andy's voice is appalling. Saw them Liverpool Empire mid 80's. One of the worst concerts I've ever seen.....and I've seen some bad ones

Yazoo would spring to my mind. Love OMD and Ultravox next.
Before they went off the rails into the mighty ravine of pomp, Simple Minds made some sublime albums, New Gold Dream being their epitome.
Honorable mention: John Foxx and Gary Numan.
Special mentions to New Musik and Fad Gadget.
