Dolphins

Okay it's time to talk about dolphins. Where were you the first time you saw a dolphin? Did you ever watch "Flipper"? "Day of the Dolphin"? Did you ever swim with a dolphin? Did you ever dream that you swam with a dolphin?

Thanks for sharing! :D

I was eight when I first saw a dolphin show in Ulstrup, Denmark. Some small converted farm building in a village. I never swam with any dolphins, but once I dreamt that I did, and that was before I learnt of the therapeutic effects. I don't think I ever saw "Flipper", except perhaps by chance. The world needs more dolphin movies.

There was a punk Flipper, too, at one point. They made a big splash.

The "dolphinarium" that I visited in 1972 was the only one of its kind in Denmark. It was privately owned and had opened in 1968, directly inspired by the TV show.

Good question! No, I first met Zilth Pilchards in an elevator in April 1995.

Ultstrup "Castle", where I saw the first show. Christian Toft, the owner, started out with two dolphins in 1968. They were called Whisky and Soda. More dolphins would be added later.

I really used to like canned tuna. Dolphins have spoiled the fun. Assholes.

Thor Heyerdahl didn't like dolphins. Slagged them off loads in that Kon-Tiki book.

Why Queen Elizabeth Owns All of the Dolphins and Swans in England

https://www.travelandleisure.com/travel ... abeth-owns

Queen Elizabeth is a well-known animal lover. Over 80 years, the queen has owned an estimated 30 corgis, each just as special as the last. But her royal menagerie doesn’t stop at tiny dogs. Here are just a few of the more exotic animals owned by Her Majesty — both living in Buckingham Palace and around the U.K.

...........

The Queen’s power doesn’t stop at land’s end. In fact, thanks to a rule that dates back to the 1300s, Her Majesty technically owns all the sturgeons, whales, and dolphins in the waters around the U.K., according to TIME.

"This statute is still valid today, and sturgeons, porpoises, whales, and dolphins are recognised as 'fishes royal': when they are captured within 3 miles of U.K. shores or wash ashore, they may be claimed on behalf of the Crown,” TIME reports. “Generally, when brought into port, a sturgeon is sold in the usual way, and the purchaser, as a gesture of loyalty, requests the honour of its being accepted by Elizabeth."

Sturgeons, eh? Uhmm, good caviar. Anyway, the Ulstrup Castle dolphinarium closed in 1980, and the daughter, who had trained them all, became a school teacher instead.
