The New Basement Tapes

Postby Six String » 05 Apr 2021, 02:58

How many people here bought it?
How many like it?
Is it time ti rethink this project?

Me
Yes
Yes

I’ve never stopped listening to this but it’s never spent large amounts of time on my tt, just consistent. It sounds better today than it ever has. I think this is a hidden gem. Thoughts?

Are you talking about the Dylan Basement Tapes archive box thingie or an alleged "supergroup?"
I bought the Basement Tapes box with the intention of poring over it with Invisible Republic and the Harry Smith Anthology (among other things) but it's a daunting project and I haven't gotten to it yet, though it's always there, right on the horizon of things I want to do.

I've always loved the Basement Tapes LP thing they cobbled together int the 70s.

I suppose you're talking about the box?

I have the original but didn't shell out for the full meal.

Didn't really want to hear six takes of Tears of Rage and others.

A bit much.

How many people here bought it? - Didn't buy it, but got a promo copy from my work (back when we were still in the office)

How many like it? - I...like it, sure. There's a lot of talented people on it. And some of the new music works just fine. But I couldn't escape the feeling that the assembled cast was trying way too hard to treat a project that was very spontaneous and instinctive when Dylan did it with far too much reverence. Dylan just puts it out there like he's idly swishing his tail, these guys try to recreate the feeling of Making Art. The main effect that had on me was to give me more appreciation for the original.

Is it time to rethink this project? - Maybe. I'll give it another listen soon and see if my opinion has changed any. I can certainly always get some joy out of hearing Rhiannon Giddens sing.

This is what I was posting about. I played it last night and it was sounding better than I remembered. I used to listen to side one and then stop. Last night was different.

Lost On The River: The New Basement Tapes is a music event 47 years in the making. It's an historic album project from five of music's finest artists -- Elvis Costello, Rhiannon Giddens (Carolina Chocolate Drops), Taylor Goldsmith (Dawes), Jim James (My Morning Jacket) and Marcus Mumford (Mumford & Sons) -- in unique collaboration with a 26-year-old Bob Dylan. Produced by project creator T Bone Burnett, the album was recorded in March, 2014 at Capitol Studios in Hollywood, where the artists and Burnett convened for two weeks to write and create music for a treasure trove of long-lost lyrics handwritten by Bob Dylan in 1967 during the period that generated the recording of the legendary Basement Tapes. The collective completed and recorded dozens of songs, the first 20 of which appear on this deluxe edition.
Things that a fella can't forget...
