It was never that good of an album in the first place. I did get the reissue and still wasn't impressed.

beg to diffa!
well, I leave you as the best judge of what impresses you but I always loved all three of those unauthorized LP's with the Gary Panter covers.
in fact, I think all three are terrific which was tough for me at the time. I saw Zappa on "the Ashman Report" on TV holding up the covers and telling me not to buy them.

I was a very bad Zappa fan but a very happy one. I especially think the orchestral version of "Duke Of Prunes" is absolutely fantastic! that guitar solo scorching over all that brass - fantastic stuff IMHO.

I do really like this and, of course, Frank’s playing, but I think the mixed time signature hampers it somewhat.

I noticed today that a lot of those 2012 CD reissues are already out of print, or almost out of print. Some can be had very cheaply from Amazon US right now (but they're European pressings); others - Studio Tan, for one - are gone gone gone. If there are any of those that you might want but have put off getting, now would be a good time to act.

Only just noticed this one C, but yes, a gem of a solo. Go Frank!

This is a corker (highlights too [above])

Image

Frank with Napoleon, The Fowlers, Chester and Ralph H on tubs, Ruth and George Duke

The Roxy sort of tracks - Cheepnis, Penguin, Village in Sun plus Uncle Meat, Idiot Bastard, Eric Dolphy era plus RDNZL, Big Swifty, Slime etc

Great sound and no 'audience participation' tedium.

Very robust

My only slight criticism is that Napoleon is great on the sax but not quite an Ike Willis et alia on the vocals.
Adequate though

NOW PLAYING LOUDLY!

Is there anything ‘essential’ on the big box that isn’t on the highlights disc?

Probably not

Highlights:
1. "Happy Halloween To Each And Every One Of You" (Live In Chicago, 10/31/1973, Show 1)
2. Pygmy Twylyte (Live In Chicago, 10/31/1973, Show 2)
3. The Idiot Bastard Son (Live In Chicago, 10/31/1973, Show 2)
4. Cheepnis (Live In Chicago, 10/31/1973, Show 2)
5. "Another Assembly Of Items" (Live In Chicago, 10/31/1973, Show 1)
6. The Eric Dolphy Memorial Barbecue (Live In Chicago, 10/31/1973, Show 1)
7. Kung Fu (Live In Chicago, 10/31/1973, Show 1)
8. Penguin In Bondage (Live In Chicago, 10/31/1973, Show 1)
9. T'Mershi Duween (Live In Chicago, 10/31/1973, Show 1)
10. The Dog Breath Variations (Live In Chicago, 10/31/1973, Show 1)
11. Uncle Meat (Live In Chicago, 10/31/1973, Show 1)
12. RDNZL (Live In Chicago, 10/31/1973, Show 1)
13. I'm The Slime (Live In Chicago, 10/31/1973, Show 2)
14. Big Swifty (Live In Chicago, 10/31/1973, Show 2)
15. The History Of The San Clemente Magnetic Deviation (Live In Chicago, 10/31/1973, Show 2)
16. Dickie's Such An Asshole (Live In Chicago, 10/31/1973, Show 2)

63 minutes I recall

The box is over 4 hours and includes the rehearsals which may be of interest (to play once)

I don't tend to go for multi cd boxes because I play them once and shelve them - even bands I love

Basically, and not spending too much time checking, this is about the difference:

Don’t You Ever Wash That Thing? 9:54
Montana 6:55
Father O’Blivion – Part 2 10:10
Inca Roads 10:55
Medley: Son Of Mr. Green Genes/King Kong/Chunga’s Revenge 16:23
Cosmik Debris 10:36

Sensible - I think, unless you need a pair of green plastic hands and an FZ horror mask!

Looks a lot of fun, C, but is it greatly different to the Helsinki concert?

Track listing similar only difference is extra drummer Ralph Humphrey and brother Bruce Fowler on trombone which obviously adds a different slant to the tunes

Currently listening to Hot Rats Sessions on Spotify. Very interesting listening to the outtakes moving towards the versions that you know.

I doubt I'd play it often or buy it but it's nice to hear.
