I had the delights to hear "Come On To Me" today, by chance.

It's inconceivable that Paul actually likes it or even gets something from playing it. It's just schlock, it truly is.

So - the album's out, and they were playing it in Glasgow Fopp earlier today. What I heard didn't make me want to throw up.

So far, the best bits are quite sweet (melancholy ballads - he's had a lifelong knack for this sort of thing), and the "rockers" are not especially wonderful.

It really picks up halfway through. The first few songs are not very good.

To my surprise I like "Fuh You" a lot - really nicely produced. Just wish he'd changed a few words. I mean, cute that grandpa's being cheeky, but it derails the song to my ears. Actually, lots of sloppy lyrics here - so what else is new? - but really nice production touches, and nice use of his now-limited vocal power. It's all dumb, but some of it's fun dumb and some of it's embarrassing. He even makes a reference to not getting high any more - you could have fooled me.

I think it's kind of like a solo tribute to Wings - in both good and bad ways.

Haven't heard it yet, there's an interview with McCartney with Sodajerker https://www.sodajerker.com/podcast/, a Liverpudlian songwriting duo. Many of their podcasts, which are all interviews with songwriters, are very interesting listening.

Cons:
For some reason the sequencing on the new album is terrible, starting off with a plodding ballad, the fuh-ing awful 'Fuh You' slap bang in the middle of the track listing, the two longest tracks right at the end. You could have easily chopped off the worst 3-4 songs (Fuh You, Confidante, People Want Peace for a start) and had a more satisfying overall listen. The lyrics for much of the material needed a bit more time to be worked on.

Very uneven listening.

It's so bad I have to say it again, Fuh You is complete shit.

Pros:
'Dominoes' and 'Who Cares' are classic McCartney melodies, either of which should have been a single rather than those chosen. 'Back In Brazil' is surprisingly quite an ear worm too. 'Despite Repeated Warnings' is pretty decent. The closing track, 'Hunt You Down/Naked/C-Link' reminds me of the Red Rose Speedway melody.

That's about it that I can think of for now, not too shabby for a 76 year old.

I've farted around with a few tracks from "Egypt Station" and I feel pretty much the way I always do. the ballads strike me as maudlin or cloying and the other stuff usually grabs me one way or the other or it doesn't. I don't think the songs are much but I think there are good tracks. but HELL, I've felt that way about his records for years. I remember when everybody was plotzing over "flowers in the dirt" but, unlike most of the people lucky enough to get paid to write about such things, the songs really didn't do that much for me. for that matter, neither did the tracks.

on the new one I like the ones where he endeavors to rock out the best. I think it's neat that the guy who wrote "All My Loving" likes to monkey around with feedback and such as he nears his 80's.
