Talking of which, there is going to be a heatwave, starting today. We need to get cracking with a venue, seeking out the coolest one temperature wise may be a consideration.
You come at the Queen, you best not miss.

Suffering some very non-becoming jealousy.
When the date for this jolly was put up there, I didn't realize how long the visit of Prof & Missus would be. I made plans pertaining to the weekend in the above title.
But it seems that all the fun stuff is already happening in Austin with the two couples, at least according to facebook.
Please save some adventure for your additional out-of-town visitors.
I'm really looking forward to us all getting together, but don't want to feel all "you should have been here a few days ago!"

I'll admit, poutiness like this isn't me at my best. I apologize for my covetous behavior. Wish I was seeing everybody in person sooner than the few days down the road we're booked.

Aw c'mon, Sam. You've been to an Austin JU before!

Next weekend's your chance to do it all over again.

Besides, the Prof will be drunk most of the time anyway.

$10 per person, payable to me.

I can't be sure this is the exact same outfit we used last time, but it looks like it should be good.

Ok, here's the plan, people. We have definitly decided on Opals on Congress for the venue. Here is the website and details.

http://www.opaldivines.com/penn-field/index.html

It's the Penn Field venue. It has a great patio, decent food and drink. The misters come on when it gets hot, and it is going to be hot. I would suggest a meet time of about 5pm otherwise we'll be wankered too soon, though I know that's not necessarily a bad thing. It's an easy bus ride or walk for all of you staying on Congress. There is a pub quiz starting at 10pm which initially we thought might put us off the venue. However, it has occurred to us that it wouldn't stop the fun, and we might even take part. ha ha ha.

The tickets are booked for the bat night, so in the spirit of a meet up on Friday we can either decide to eat first or afterwards - I am tending to think afterwards, as we are thinking that really we should go here

http://www.easytigeraustin.com/

we initially thought we could go to easy Tiger for the JU but it is likely to be too mental crowded. It is pretty and they serve sausages. Good, yes? Good.

So we haven't really cemented any other plans - if folks have ideas about where and when to meet up on Friday, do let us know either by phone or here! Ooh it's really happening isn't it!

To get to Opal Divine's from The Austin Motel area, one can take the 1L or 1M bus on S. Congress headed southbound, away from downtown. Or one could take a cab, or drive there and leave the car there overnight. There's another bar not far away on S. Congress (Crow Bar) that we can go to if the pub quiz is too much to bear.

We're renting a car. Makes the transportation to and from airport easier. Makes it possible to go check out the pinball place if we get a chance.

An important update: we've decided to CHANGE THE VENUE.

We went to Opal Divine's last night at roughly JU time. Based on that visit, we've changed our minds. Rather than Opal Divine's, we'll do it downtown at CASINO EL CAMINO. It's on 6th, between Neches and Red River. There are a few reasons for this. First, and most importantly, the plan for Opal's was based on its patio. But it's blazing ass hot, and the sun is still high at 5 p.m., which is actually the hottest time of the day. There is only so much misters can do against the heat. And the inside of Opal's is no place to be. Second, the music they play at Opal's is typically appalling. Third, Casino has a great jukebox and a patio, should we decide to be outside at some point. What we lose is a better selection of draught beer, but we'll survive and there are plenty of other places in town to pick up wild and wooly beers (I can advise). From the Austin Motel, one can take the 1L or 1M on Congress downtown, get off on 6th and walk toward the pandemonium and through it about five blocks. It's on the right, just past Flamingo Cantina. Sixth Street is generally appalling, similar to Bourbon St., but Casino is a beacon of relative sanity. They also have insane burgers and strong drinks.

I strongly second my own suggestion here. Highs in the 100s, the best $3 you can spend is at Barton Springs. It's also THE quintessential Austin summer experience. The water is cool, a constant 68 F. It's cold when you jump in, but spending a few minutes in the water will cool you down like nothing else. There's also an interesting mix of people and a cool view of downtown from the far end of the pool. There's plenty of shade on the banks if you just want to hang out downtown, and there are showers and stuff if you want to leave ready for the world.
