Amazing Jolly Up venue in the UK
http://peakmermaid.co.uk/
I stayed in this remarkable venue in the Peak District last weekend with 30 or so friends for my "hag" weekend. It is truly amazing! You have your own bar, a huge area with sofas and TVs (excellent for films), a massive dining room with seating for 34 and all the rooms are nicely spaced out so that you can have a bit of privacy. The walls are made of stone, so if you make a bit of noise you won't hear it. We all thought it was in a stunning location too.
It works out at about £100 each for a weekend if 30 people go. It's a bit remote, but might be an idea for a more extended weekend at some point and cheaper for our northern brethren than going south. Having your own bar is great fun too.

It looks fantastic.
I kept thinking "swim as far as you can, swim as far as you can".

I'd come.
It'd take someone to organise it very properly though - collect subs up front etc..

The only way it could be organised is by payment in advance. It's already booked out until May 2012.

I can come. My house is on the same road, about a mile and a half away. No shortage of fantastic walks and pubs round here, plus Alton Towers is less than half an hour down the road.
By the way, there is a local legend that if you head due east from the Mermaid Inn there is no higher ground until you reach the Urals. I have no idea whether that's true; I just read it somewhere the other day. But there's no question that the Mermaid is high up and very open to the elements. We're down the hill a bit, but still high up.

So if 30 people commit then (typically) 27 pull out - the 3 remaining will have to cough up £1,000 each for 2 nights.
What could possibly go wrong?

Could this be somewhere we could consider a BCB 10th birthday party in 2013?

Given the numbers we might expect for a 10th anniversary bash, the one problem with this idea, to quote twice from the website.......
sleeps 24-26
No other property within a mile

BCBers don't need beds! Just clear enough empty glasses from the table to rest your weary head, and they'll wake you for breakfast.

Re: Amazing Jolly Up venue in the UK
It's huge btw.
What I could suggest is that you could have a limit on the numbers of people staying there over a weekend but others could visit but not be able to kip there in comfort (although there are about 10 sofas if I remember correctly). The nearest town is Leek or Buxton.
I think it would be so much more fun than a pub or whatever for a big celebration. You get to bring all your own booze and food and it's in an amazing location as I'm sure Dang65 will testify to.

How easy is it to get to if you don't drive? Any railway stations nearby?
Re: Amazing Jolly Up venue in the UK
Can you imagine being stuck there when the booze runs out?
I can just see me and Jumper K being sent out on the desolate moors to try and find an off -license in the middle of the night!

No matter what comes, I don't see Jumper K being unprepared.

Jumper K, maybe. You'll be asleep after three pints and talking shit about Arsenal.
You come at the Queen, you best not miss.
