Well Roddy did of course!

He specifically asked for "arty types" to give him suggestions for his book...like non arty types couldn't possibly have an idea that might be of use to him...

Are you suggesting that people are writing funny replies because they have taken offence? You're reading something into this which simply wasn't there - I didn't use the phrase 'arty types' - I just meant those with an interest in or knowledge of painting, design or photography. We have quite a few posters here who have professional experience of those things and a recent thread on favourite living painters showed there are lots of people here who know far more than me about contemporary art.

This is all very good - sensational (and dare I say perfect) visual - but can we not insert something more au courant and have the title font comprise of line pictures of nude poets cavorting with woodland creatures? At the very least I should like to see a picture of Emily Dickinson licking sick off a distressed otter.
Goodness gracious me.

Dennis Potter was a plotter and a yachter and a botter - what a rotter! With a blotter and a squatter. Oh, and an otter.

Can I suggest that the reason you're not getting serious responses is that it's not really a serious request. Why don't you put together a proper brief? An overview of the books content, your budget, technical specifications, a guide to the look and feel of what you're after and maybe a proposition of some kind - what's the one thing the cover needs to reflect more than anything?

And then perhaps approach a professional graphic designer or design company, show them the brief, explain what your after, agree a cost. Why do you think asking people in a vague way on what is, essentially, a music fans site, is going to get what you want?

I can pm you loads of links to all kinds of designers if that would help.

Two reasons - one, when I posted my last book cover here a while back, there were some very interesting comments about it, including some from people who evidently had specialised knowledge; two, the recent art thread had lots of interesting artists I didn't know. We already have very experienced designers involved - but they want my input and I was hoping someone would point me to specific images or artists who use multiplicity, repeated object images, textured abstracts and so on. But the moment's passed (as has my deadline for submitting ideas) and I enjoyed the gags as much as anyone.

What about a picture of a sign saying "Beware: Walter De La Mare is setting fire to his hair as he's unable to bear this world filled with care, he smashed up his iPod on a dare and he hasn't got a spare"

I hope there wasn't any chippy sauce on said tea. That would be a tragic waste.

Mind you, it would lend a certain gore-tastic atmosphere if the cover photo was taken in black-and-white.

I am tittering, nay weeping with laughter at this thread.

How did we ever let it die?

Don't know how I missed it. Great stuff. Something involving Yeats, Gates and sheep is struggling to come through but I can't do it. :?
