BCB Top Films - full 460 and individual lists

Postby Penk! » 28 Jul 2008, 20:56

OK, you asked for it... this is just cut-and-pasted directly from the Excel file. It's in order from 1 to 460, but once you get past the first 150 or so it's just the films with one vote apiece. A few names aren't entered in full, but you should be able to work out what they are. It could be fun, before the individual lists are posted, to read through wondering "who the hell voted for Ishtar?" ;)

I suppose it is the nature of the beast, but the bottom 410 is more interesting than the top 50. I'm amazed Gates of Heaven isn't anywhere to be found.

"The Testament of Dr. Mabuse" is the one I suspect hardly anyone here has seen. Not so obscure, really- it's Fritz Lang- but hard to find. I heartily recommend it. A psychological horror film that has really never been equalled- though I find "The Tenant" one of the most underrated movies of all time- that has parallels in the rise of Nazi Germany- which drove Lang out of his home country to Hollywood where he made a few decent films, but was never the same director.

I never actually saved my list with the points; I just have a list of the films, and I think I worked the points out on some paper then put them straight into the database. However, I'm pretty sure this is what the list would have looked like had I actually written it out in full:

Black Cat White Cat - 8
Spirit of the Beehive - 7
Blade Runner - 7
The Deer Hunter - 7
Solaris - 7
Annie Hall - 6
Last Year at Marienbad - 6
The 400 Blows - 6
Stalker - 5
Three Colours: Blue - 5
Metropolis - 4

The Godfather - 4
Aliens - 4

I can't think about it too much or smoke blows out of my ears. I look at all the lists and wonder "did I really choose 'what ever happened to baby jane" over 'Ordet' and "Citizen Kane"?" yeah, I did. I'd rather post the first twenty out of my gob than blow a fuse. I figure the fact that they're the first ten out of my gob must count for something.

I saw "Dr. Mabuse" with subtitles I could actually read recently and for the very first time. I love Fritz Lang and think those films are amazing - what contemporary concerns! it's even better when you know what the hell people are saying!

I love "sounder". I can watch that scene when Winfeld and his family are reunited and it will reduce me to tears even on a "clip" show. I'm a sucker for that movie. it's like my "old yeller", I suppose.
