toomanyhatz wrote:"The Testament of Dr. Mabuse" is the one I suspect hardly anyone here has seen. Not so obscure, really- it's Fritz Lang- but hard to find. I heartily recommend it. A psychological horror film that has really never been equalled- though I find "The Tenant" one of the most underrated movies of all time- that has parallels in the rise of Nazi Germany- which drove Lang out of his home country to Hollywood where he made a few decent films, but was never the same director.

Been one of my favourite films for years, although I don't think it's as underrated now as perhaps it once was. A really good restoration has been available through Criterion for years, which I think can only boost its reputation.

I made a list a few weeks ago then mislaid it. I remembered most of what was on it but there's a couple I forgot including Jaws which would have been high up on my list. I like a horror and Sci Fi so lots of them. I think Rosemary's Baby was on my original list too. I couldn't make up my mind which of the LoTR movies to include so just went for the first.

2001: A Space Odyssey 9
Rear Window 8
The Exorcist 7
Strangers On A Train 6
The Third Man 6
Bladerunner 5
Alien 5
Fargo 5
The Innocents 5
The Haunting (1963) 5
The Omen 5
Monty Python and The Holy Grail 5
Monty Python and The Life of Brian 4
Lord Of The Rings (Fellowship of the Ring) 4
Rebecca 4
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid 4
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon 4
The Usual Suspects 3
The Incredibles 3
Schindler's List 3

pig bodine wrote:Absolutely no attempt whatsoever at compiling a list of "great" films, these were my favorites off the top of my head a few weeks ago. It would be entirely different now.

I couldn't care less about what's "greatest" either in music, or in film. I've never studied either of them. I'd rather listen to Fool For the City or Rio Grande Mud than Revolver or Pet Sounds, and I'd rather rewatch Slapshot than the Godfather.

alphabetical--divide points equally

Aguirre, The Wrath Of God
Baby, the Rain Must Fall
The Bank Dick
The Battle Of Algiers
Dr Strangelove
8 1/2
A Face In the Crowd
Faster Pussycat, Kill Kill
Gun Crazy
Playtime
Repsulsion
Le Samurai
Seconds
Shadows
Shock Corridor
Slapshot
The Taking Of Pelham 1-2-3
The Third Man
Weekend
Yojimbo

For all your disclaimers, that's a list I would be really happy to be stuck with on a deserted island. (Though I don't know every single one.)

    11 Points
    THE THIRD MAN (Reed, 1949)
    7 Points
    DAZED & CONFUSED (Linklater, 1993)
    BLUE VELVET (Lynch, 1986)
    SULLIVAN'S TRAVELS (Sturges, 1941)
    6 Points
THE THIN BLUE LINE (Morris, 1988)
    SUNSET BLVD (Wilder, 1950)
    GROUNDHOG DAY (Ramis, 1993)
AGUIRRE: THE WRATH OF GOD (Herzog, 1972)
    5 Points
    TAXI DRIVER (Scorsese, 1976)
    CITIZEN KANE (Welles, 1941)
THE SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS (Mackendrick, 1957)
    4 Points
    VIVRE SA VIE (Godard, 1962)
THE LIVES OF OTHERS (Donnersmarck, 2006)
MCCABE & MRS MILLER (Altman, 1971)
    LA JETEE (Marker, 1962)
    BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN (Whale, 1931)
    3 Points
A SHORT FILM ABOUT LOVE (Kieślowski, 1989)
THIS IS SPINAL TAP (Reiner, 1982)
    THE CONVERSATION (Coppola, 1974)
    2 Points
    "M" (Lang, 1931)
    1 Point
    REAR WINDOW (Hitchcock, 1954)

Though to be honest there were a good two dozen or so others that could have made the final cut, and in many ways, the points were fairly arbitrarily assigned. And A Short Film About Love was meant to represent the Dekalog, which was disallowed on a technicality- namely, it's a serial rather than a "film" as such.
Good to see Quaco chose the Passenger, that was in my shortlist! I might put together an "unlucky to miss out" list when I get the chance. Essentially, the 20 I picked were meant to represent films that changed the way I look at cinema (Vivre Sa Vie, La Jetee, The Thin Blue Line) and ones which are comfort food (Dazed & Confused, Groundhog Day)
It's before my time but I've been told, he never came back from Karangahape Road.

Yeah I was, in fact many of his films possess a really striking formal power, but for me the Dekalog is his crowning achievement, I can't think of a series of films that deals with faith in the everyday situations, and ones that are at once so direct and simple (the acting in every piece is a masterpiece in unforced naturalism), and the way it deals with potentially soap-operatic premises (not least the episode where you're unsure of the actual relationship between the father and his "daughter," or the one where a wife challenges the doctor to make a pronouncement on her husband's condition with absolute certainty) in such subtle and moving ways. And the two which were turned into features seemed to encapsulate all of the series' key themes- jealousy, lust, insecurity and deception (A Short Film About Love), or the right for fair justice even in the face of the indefensible, and the deeper hurt beneath the actions (A Short Film About Killing). James R is going to disagree with me thoroughly, but Kieślowski may well be the most generous and open-minded director in late-20th century "art" cinema. For me, I like his work because it's all about chance and the choices we make- and how they intertwine.
It's before my time but I've been told, he never came back from Karangahape Road.

I would have given weighted scores but I couldn't do the math. Hell, I gave mine all the same score and Penk wrote me back that I did the math wrong anyway.

Anyway, I looked at my PMs & couldn't even find the list I sent. Bah!

Now that my laptop is up and working again (finally!) I thought about the films that didn't quite make the list. As always, these are often more interesting thaN the final tally. I think it would look something like this, in no particular order:

    BLOW UP
    THE PASSENGER
    PARIS, TEXAS
    THE HUSTLER
    BLADE RUNNER
    WINGS OF DESIRE
    MULHOLLAND DR.
    DOG DAY AFTERNOON
    AMORES PERROS
    IN MY FATHER'S DEN
    CITY LIGHTS
    THE OUTLAW JOSEY WALES
    THE DEKALOG ( ;) )
    RATATOUILLE
    SOME LIKE IT HOT
    MILLER'S CROSSING
    AU HASARD BALTHAZAR
    VERTIGO
    DR STRANGELOVE
    THE APARTMENT

Among others...

Actually, it looks even less interesting than the original submitted. Oh well, I guess my tastes are fairly ordinary :-)

Because people just assume you have a huge crush on Richard Gere?
Who cares. He's dashing as a young Windy City so-and-so and Malick is a genius.
Never has a film ameliorated upon subsequent viewings like this one has. It's totally deserving of Top 20.

No, Just because it's such ravishingly beautiful movie .

I also cannot understand why his work didn't score higher .

When actors will say they'll work for him for no wage ,( Sean Penn , The Thin Red Line , ) .......
