Excellent news.

JU Diary Day 1

Got in late (thanks American Airlines), can report that the buss service from the airport delivers streight to the door - $15 per head, which is much cheaper then a taxi. their desk is right oposite the luggage carosels, you can't miss it.

Hotel is good, although the swimming pool is better described as a 'sitting in water' pool. Margeritta's are $7.50, which I assume is cheap?

Didn't do much other then wander around today and recover from jet lag. 'Culture' starts tomorrow!

So, you're not lying. You really weren't in Hebden Bridge this afternoon?

$7.50 is a very expensive drink. Hotel lounges can be among the most expensive places to drink.

Well, I'm not strict. I eat seafood.

(There's a related joke there, but it's probably best we leave it be. :P )

$7.50 for a margarita's not too bad, though it depends how big it is. You can find them cheaper elsewhere, probably.

Of course, I may be spoiled. I live in Bumfuck, Ohio, where prices aren't as steep. My New Orleans guidebook says to expect anywhere from $3.50 to $8.00 for a cocktail, or $1.50 to $4.00 for a beer.

A $7.50 margarita is priced reasonably only if it comes with good liquor. I wouldn't pay more than $3.50 for one with well booze.

BALLS!!
I just realized my flight was scheduled to get in at 11:58 pm.
$276 later, it now gets in at about 11:30. AM. :x
$150 of that was a "rescheduling fee" to which I "agreed" to subject myself.

Well, thank you all indeed for the wonderful reception. I'm really looking forward to making it and I apologize for the late notice. I didn't want to say yay or nay til the chips were all counted. I'll see you Friday where the wine and liquor flows. This year I'm on my best bahaviour: I promise to only use one dirty swear per sentence, unless I happen to be addressing the fucking rabbit food eating cocksuckers. Some traditions must be kept after all.
You read that in a book, didn't you?!

As I got ready for work this morning, I had occasion to meditate upon the margarita issue and I realized that you might have paid $7.50 for a frozen margarita, which is a price justifiable in only the rarest of circumstances.

Certainly not - only proper Margeria's for me!

Drinks are proving to be expensive - I have not seen one for less then $4, and that was domestic mass produced shit.

Spent last night crawling down Burbon street, not to self: Beer, Beer, Beer, Margerita, Mojito, Beer, Beer, Beer is not a good combination.
Best beer found so far is the 'Black Forrest' from the Crescent city brewery - the local 'amber' is very mediochre.

Re: Car Hire, there is a Budget Renta-a-car on Canal St. I will probably check it out today, as we want to go and visit some of the plantations etc. later in the week.

Anyway - Culture starts today!

I don't know if you can get any of the Great Lakes Brewing Company beers down there (they're from Cleveland). But if you can, try one. They're great!

I'd like to see the plantation called Laura. The slave quarters are preserved, and the tour gives attention to the daily lives of the slaves as well as the owners.

Funnily enough, we did this today, and it was excellent - although you only get an hour (guided tour only). In the end we went by tour company bus - next time I will hire a car so we can fit in more then one attraction a day!

If anyone fancies taking a car out sometime over the JUOTA then we would be happy to 'chip in'.

I thought the same, but the problem is the ones I checked on all seem to be closed on Sunday and Monday. Meaning if you want the car for one day you have to get it for three!

Only reason I'd want it is to go to the baseball game, but I get the sense you're not interested.

A few here still are, seemingly. Can anyone that arrives sooner than Friday night look into the possiblity of:

a) tickets still being available
and
b) availability of any shuttles to the game?

No biggie if not, I can do it Saturday day, but just a thought.

Oh, and are we doing a riverboat tour? I'm up for that!
