So, "Crazy" by Gnarls Barkley, then.........

Postby Diamond Dog » 16 Apr 2006, 10:45

The first single to reach number one in the UK on download sales only.

But that's not why I started the thread. After hearing virtually nothing else on the radio for around three months (maybe more?) I find myself still thinking "Man, what a great single". Truly. It's a return to tunes and singing.

What's the opinions on here? I fully expect a slating, by the way.

I'm thinking I was hearing it more than that on the radio over here - it's only a few weeks since it was released Marios.

It's a pretty good single, sure, though I'm much more excited about ghostface's "The Champ" (which is truly ballistic, a real sledgehammer of a track). It's nice to see Cee-Lo use his voice in an appropriate way- too often he's not as eccentric as he thinks he is, and I found heaps of "...Is the Soul Machine" pretty bland, like the knockoffs from the Outkast double that they rejected for being too 'straight.'

Certainly, it conjures a nice mood, and maybe Dangermouse might be the new ubiqutious producer ala Neptunes/Timbaland/Kanye have been for their respective years. It's a pretty nicely constructed song, no doubt. Others have excited me more, but this hits a certain spot.

And yes, I downloaded it. Great video too.
It's before my time but I've been told, he never came back from Karangahape Road.

I am so in love with that that it ended in my Top 50 tracks in Coan's thread!

DD, you probably need to hear that one too. The two best singles of 2006.

Matt, is it already a single though? I've had the whole album for a while so i'm not sure what the first single will be.

If it isn't a single it definitely should be.

I nominated Crazy tentatively for the 'songs representing decades' thread. Although I felt it was a slightly quixotic choice - one of the refreshing things about the song is that it doesn't sound much like anything else in contemporary music - I think I'll stand by that call. Certainly, the song has captured the zeitgeist pretty well.

It's an intriguing mixture of elements - 70s-style soul vocal, stripped-down production, prodding funkless bass stabs - that somehow makes sense. It's a great record, and I look forward to hearing the album.

It's a great album, but don't expect to find another Crazy on it. The opener is great and there are a couple more great tunes and the rest is pretty good, just not as great.

Another record called crazy. You could make a whole album of songs with exactly the same title, and all the songs would be about the same thing. This one reminds me of the Seal song...certainly in it vibe and vocal style.
I don't like it much. Its a lazy lyric, and a groove, rather than a melody. OK for children I suppose.
