My oh my - what a great first round!

Two seminally robust tracks I know backwards

Traffic (who were not actually billed as 'Traffic' at the time) in all their glory.

From the percussion of the late Rebop Kwaku Baah to the delightful flutes and stuff from the late great Chris Wood.

Superb, blistering guitar solos from Dave Mason with the guv'nor Winwood holding the reins.

Fantastic.

Then there is the great Hillage - he of Khan and, in particular, Gong fame.

Daevid's presence is felt here.

An extra track on Motivation Radio if my serves me correctly

Tough call but I am going

[I've listened to both again and changed my mind]

Tough call. I prefer the studio "Fantasy," and the main thing that one seems to have added is extended solos. And it's not exactly a 'deep cut' which wouldn't matter if it were a superior version, but it's not. The Hillage is pretty cool while it's happening but doesn't leave that much of an impression, like a lot of his stuff.

I guess B, for digging a little deeper and being possibly my favorite Hillage song that's appeared here. But the usual 'subject to change' caveats apply.

I love it when Traffic become expansive and stretch out and they do so splendidly on this live version.

The Hillage track sounds like the kind of thing Ozric Tentacles based their entire career around. Agreeably spacey and made me want to dig this album out as I have it it but very rarely give it a spin.

Good opening match but Ill go with Traffic.

Traffic may well appeal to my rockiest tendencies in this round. Hillage has that horrific Eastern-infused hot mess thing going on.

A. Although I have quite a few Traffic albums, and have seen them live, I’ve never really got on with Winwood’s constipated singing style.
B. Hillage. Made probably the worst album I bought at the time, Fish Rising. But he doesn’t sing on this, and it wasn’t bad.

Great opening match up! C corker.

A- started buying album in 76 so old stuff was cut out bins. Always went for side two - Mr Fantasy/Gimme Some Lovin. Great jam and I like Winwood in here.

B. Steve Hillage - my favorite underrated guitarist (Gong, Uriel, Khan, System 7, The Orb, Clearlight, Steven Hillage Band)- Love The Golden Vibe this was on Live Herald album jam after "All Too Much ". Beautiful typical Hillage riffs mixed with Miquette Giraudy synths.

Flew to Amsterdam for the reunion show (first steve hillage band show since 1980);

Then they came across the pond to NEARfest

sorry Traffic.

B sounds very fresh to my ears and A very tired.

Canteen was one of my first albums I owned, so the looseand sometimes messy live version is the definitive one for me.

At his best, Hillage creates glorious riffs you can easily get lost in, and this is a prime example.

This is awfully difficult and I really want this match to be a draw... which is why I gleefully vote A.

I agree, the studio version of A is better but still enjoyable.
Seeing Hillage next year live with Gong. One of the most underrated guitarists for mine.

That version of Dear Mr Fantasy is simply glorious and really cooks. The Hillage selection is less familiar to me and a more obscure selection. On that basis i'll give it to B as i enjoyed the layers of trippy guitar and it sounds a bit like Hawkwind.

I don’t understand why people don’t vote for the track they prefer. It’s weird.

I'm not sure if you are referring to my vote & i apologize if i have my wires crossed. I can confirm that i voted for the track that i preferred out of the two options and i did listen 3 times to each pick before finalising my decision.

Or me.

Were it simply a matter of picking the 'better' track, everybody would just cherry-pick off the BCB top 100 or something (not that there's necessarily a definitive version of that). Heck, I'm already somewhat outside my wheelhouse to begin with, so my decision is based on a combination of things including whether I learn something new, or what degree of cleverness is involved in the choice.

Takes all kinds, right? :D
