Re: PC21 Last Round Match 2
Soft Machine - one of the greatest bands that ever walked the planet doing a corker of a track with the Etheridge/Babbington/Marshall/Travis line-up
John Marshall was 77 when this was recorded - the lad has slowed and simplified down a bit but he still brilliant!
Travis, the youngster fits in well and Etheridge does his bit delightfully
Babbington on bass - even older than Marshall and probably The Softs best bassist
A great choice!
Quiet Sun - coincidentally another Canterbury Scene band with Phil Manzanera on guitar
This is great track - full of music. Brian Eno adds a bit here too I recall
Damn - this is so hard - the tightest match in the competition
Too close to call - as tight as a duck's ass/arse
Damn!!! What would Jumper K do and I'll do the opposite...?

Two very nice picks, the first a quality live version of a track I'm familiar with and the second completely new to me and in a similar vein but with guitar instead of sax. Phil Manzanera's pre-Roxy band it seems.
I'll give it to the unfamiliar one B

Re: PC21 Last Round Match 2
A is a sentimental favorite, as it's a show I intended to go to (don't remember why I didn't) that may be close to the very last show attended by Zoomboogity. Would have been nice to be there, and I do think the lineup does a good job of keeping the name alive, but it's still ultimately going to suffer in comparison to the original. Had Wyatt been there (I knew he wouldn't), I would've moved earth and sky.
B is on an album I have somewhere, but never play. There are some dead spots here, but enough interesting ones to make me consider giving it a replay.

Re: PC21 Last Round Match 2
Another great pairing.
Have had Quiet Sun's album for approx 45 years now and it's a goodie. Was tempted to include a song from it myself - Mummy Was An Asteroid, Daddy Was A Small Non-Stick Kitchen Utensil would have been it.
And then there's a great live version of Softs classic.
I'm more a jazzer than a rocker.

The Canterbury Scene showdown of Etheridge vs Manzanera? I think Phil edges here.

A big resounding meh.
I'll take the slightly frazzled guitar over endless horn blowing.

i enjoyed the live performance of the old Ratledge tune. I didn't even know they were still performing - good on them. I think i picked a track from the Quiet Sun album in a previous cup.

Re: PC21 Last Round Match 2
As C says, this is a right pickle, and no mistake. I have met both guitarists, Etheridge and Manzanera, and truly delightful both were indeed.
It pains me to have to shun either band or either track.
But Quiet Sun, from a long-term favourite album, just shade it today.

Re: PC21 Last Round Match 2
Great match, not dissimilar, and I like both!
But I feel that there's a lightness of touch in the original Out-Bloody-Rageous that is missing here.
In the end it's Manzanera's sound over Etheridge's.

Re: PC21 Last Round Match 2
Two C corkers!
A- I saw this tour in 2019 by the reformed new lineup of Soft Machine. The original bloody rageous is a favorite Of mine. Love Theo’s interpretation along with the Softs lineup of Soft Machine. Had seen a number of the soft Machine family members live(see Zoomboogity‘s list) but never saw Marshall, babs or etheridge.
B- beautiful Phil tone and playing. Very under unappreciated album.
I’ll take the original

Re: PC21 Last Round Match 2
The usual slightly dischordant twaddle from Soft Machine.
B veers on the edge slightly but overall is less dischordant.
