Re: PC21- Round 4 Match 4
ya know what? (no. what, kath?) i love both picks.
that good rats track is honestly a tasty ass jammmm. the weird a cappella comes in for a bit, and then whammmm, right back into jamland.
B is obviously what would be a go-to full-blown proggy affair, some of the sections i need more time with, but some were brilliant. this needs more listens. yes it does.
i wish to reward both.
i'll hafta come back to this. satellite signal just went out during my son's crappy scy fy movie, and it does not bode well, mwhahaha. i'll try again later.

Re: PC21- Round 4 Match 4
Now we're talkin'! Great matchup.
I know about the 'Rats as working class Long Island guys - they don't much sound like the Ramones here, do they? But pretty cool, and lots of personality, particularly in the vocals.
B is supposedly French and is 'proper' prog - I like the places it goes, and it's got a gentle nature that I find pleasing.
These both deserve votes and warrant further investigation, but I think A is a bolder pick. Usual caveats about possible change of heart, etc.

B is really enjoyable, and I love that big fuzzy bass sound. But A is more my speed. Breakneck speed!

Never heard of either of these before
B is interesting sounding like Mothers Of Invention era Zappa and early Soft Machine, quite experimental.
A more of a traditional jazzy rocker , good though.

Pretty sure I've seen the Good Rats live. Theres almost a proto-punk aesthetic. I like it.
I have listened to B before doing some errr... research. Its a bit too Canterbury for my liking although I'm led to believe its a classic of French Prog. Who knew there was such a thing

I don't know the first lot at all - very Allman Brothers which isn't a bad thing.
I enjoyed it very much. I love a guitar solo me.
The second 'half' with the vocals reminded me of Wishbone Ash which again is good.
Yes, very enjoyable. I will investigate further.
Onto Moving Gelatine Plates - a band I am not familiar with.
The sound like early Soft Machine - I expecting Wyatt to come screaming in in a minute!
and that bass is very Hugh.
Nice so far with some penetrating brass.
Then a mood change - LET'S ROCK!
So, two very derivative bands - a reasonable distance away from claptrap but one held my attention more than the other
It's close but I am going for the band that sounds most like Hatfield & The North and Henry Cow as the track progressed:

Re: PC21- Round 4 Match 4
as i said before, love both picks, love this match-up.
i'll go for B. i do hear the zappa/soft machine comparisons, and there is so much proggy goodness flyin around in there. but it's like splittin a frog hair, cuz A is kickass/arse in its own way.
cheers to whichever wins.

Liked both but the "French Canterbury Scene" band edged it for me.

Re: PC21- Round 4 Match 4
The Good rats was a very enjoyable jam with a good vocal section. Nice.
B had a touch of the Canterbury sound about it, the kind of thing Hatfield and the North might do. There was plenty of really neat parts and I would have liked it more if some sections had got into a groove and stuck with it for longer before moving off onto other tangents, which is often a criticism of Prog in general, and this track definitely highlights that problem. Good track though.
I like both of these but I'm going B, just.

Re: PC21- Round 4 Match 4
Bloody hell!! Who'd have thought that someone else on BCB knows (and likes) this bunch of Italians from Long Island.
It's one of their finest moments, along with the whacky Fred Upstairs and Ginger Snappers (incorporating Duke Ellington's Caravan) and their magnum opus Ratcity In Blue.
Of course, the elusive Frenchies are objectively much crazier, proggier, wilder, but also more cerebral.
A is simply more fun and kudos to the kindred spirit who picked it.

A Never heard of them but this was fun, especially before they started singing
B This was good too. I liked the guitar tone. Very Canterbury. Very nice indeed. French you say?

Re: PC21- Round 4 Match 4
A- The Good Rats - the long island bar band that made it big in their little world. I like the album Tasty and this is a good song of their nice mix of rock and blues. Not sure what its doing in a prog contest but I guess its a broad church. Saw them twice. The second time was at central park they opened for Dicky Betts and the Great Southern (who only played a few songs then walked off set saying he would be back with some friends). That show was the Allman Brothers getting back together.
B- Like Canterbury sounding Moving Gelatine Plates, I only know them because their bass player played in a band that played NEARfest (Forgas Band Phenomena). Nice song take it easily over the non prog LI bar band.

Re: PC21- Round 4 Match 4
After hearing their 2006 album Removing (released after disbanding 26 years earlier) I made a note to look out for a supposedly upcoming release which never materialised. So I must have quite liked Removing.
This was ok but A squeaks it.

Two excellent songs.
Apologies to the Good Rats, Moving Gelatine Plates are just a little more to my taste.
