B-level Krautrock vs. the self-proclaimed "greatest bass player in the world?" I'll take B, thanks.

Unsurprisingly, I have mixed feelings about Jaco - obviously he was a force of nature, and if you chose to have him play with you, you only got the very specific thing he did - he wasn't going to meet you halfway. As a result I find some of the Weather Report stuff a bit dull and show-offy. But in his solo work, he could be surprisingly lyrical and even subtle in his playing. I have that record on vinyl somewhere and remember liking it, but haven't played it in years. Might be time to revisit.

but B is downright weird, unique, first i was lookin at my screen like hmmm... and then before i knew it, i started wigglin around and shakin to it, mwhaha.

i like this match-up, but i gotta go for jaco.

A sets a nice mood. B is more of an exploration, playing around in a weird musical area, throwing in steel drums and hoping something interesting comes of it. It's not entirely unsuccessful, but also not terribly pleasant to my ears, either.

A is pleasantly jazzy but is nothing special, a bit average.
Jaco was something special and this is a great track from his first solo album.

Out of Focus were a division 2 German band that took their name from a Blue Öyster Cult track. I have the album somewhere - their music was alright even if the vocals are a bit insipid - the lad's no Lee Jackson that's for sure.

No, it's a good track selection full of music - the swathes of organ are very pleasant. A nice bass line too.

Now, talking of bass - Jaco - wow what player!

I love Jaco's playing - he was incredible.

I have this solo album two plus a couple of others - Invitation and a live one Birthday Party I think it's called.

The slight issue I have with Jaco is that despite being a great player he can't write a decent tune (that often). I think the track here is typical - well played but not very exciting or engaging. It's probably just me

I enjoyed A more:

Lets deal with B first. Hmm. Jazz. Nein Danke! Although I recognise its been sampled by Ice Cube, to much better effect.
A has a mellifluous vibe, made to be listened to whilst reclining in a meadow with a flagon of cider.
I vote for cider.

B

The German band's track wasn't very memorable. I've already forgotten what it sounded like. Despite my qualms about jazz in the prog cup, I'm voting for Jaco. The steel drums added another dimension to the sound. Jaco had got his big hitting mates Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock to play on the track.

I enjoyed the easy going nature of A and the guitar solo was very melodic with a nice tone. The vocals were the weak link.

The steel drums of the Pastorios was an intriguing intro and the different elements throughout certainly kept my interest. All in all it was decent slice of jazz fusion.

A close tie, though neither track set my world alight they both had merit.

I'll take A

A- nice song very smooth sounding and nice tone on the guitar.

B- Love this album and still play it today when I'm in a bass explosion mood. Nice Wayne and love Lenny White's drumming with the steel drums. Jaco had a lot of ideas with his solo records and this was one of them. As far as Jaco saw him first with Weather Report (front row center) then twice solo.
Seen a lot of bass player but no one commands a stage like Jaco.

I'll take the prettiness of A over virtuoso fusion.

A was pleasant.

B is the sort of tuneless jazzy twaddle I steer clear of. Zero merit for me. If you’re a musician write a frickin’ TUNE will ya?

Enjoyed both, after a couple of plays Jaco & co's noodlings become more enjoyable than the Fly Birds.

The gentleness of A is groovy but Jaco is great here...
