Prog Cup '21 Musings
Well folks, that was a really enjoyable first round and packed with corkers!
Very consistent robust choices throughout methinks.
Derivative clap-trap kept to the minimum. [Except for the Yes clone! ]
Well done Maarts and thanks
Roll on round 2....!

Re: Prog Cup '21 Musings
Round 2 contained some excellent stuff
Two Renaissance tracks already which is interesting.
Very light on the derivative claptrap too which is a blessing
Jumper K (bless him) doesn't stick out like a sore thumb like he has done in other years.
The lad is obviously learning something from the prog goons.
Good lad Frank
Yes, good lad

Never seen the merit in progbilly, then, C?
I am enjoying how several contributors ignore the ancient prog adage 'Better to remain silent and let others suspect your knowledge of prog is patchy at best, than to speak and remove all doubt'.
If for example one feels a musician should be praised when he does not actually perform on the recording in question, or exist in confusion over the order Renaissance released their albums. And additionally suffer the handicap of having been frightened by Wikipedia as a small child, and as a result avoid it whenever possible.

Arti E Mestieri and (remarkably) that Rush track are the discoveries of the cup for me so far.
By-and-large there's been a surprisingly small amount of utter bollox. Hope that keeps up.

I'll tell you exactly what I told them - I don't give a flying fuck what you think.

Yes, I really enjoyed that new discovery too.
I think I might have even voted for it.
As for utter bollox you haven’t listened to my remaining choices yet Dave....!

There's bollox everywhere. Ain't life wonderful?
Seriously, though, I've been pleasantly surprised by the amount of a) Broad Church selections and b) short, compact songs. And even c) progtastic long suites that keep my attention for 10 minutes plus, for that matter.
Best prog cup yet?

After all these years and Cups, i still did one of the things it's best not to do; use songs you love, absolutely, but don't use the ones that mean the world to you. It's just better that way.

I think it could be Dave
There's certainly less derivative claptrap and what there is half decent

Re: Prog Cup '21 Musings
You know, there is so much in the draw....
What I would love to do (and I nobody else would be arsed/assed to participate with me), and that is to rerun the whole cup for a second time but with completely different pairings/match ups.
I wonder how different the result would be?
I for one know my round 3 is struggling - as soon as I saw the 'opponent' my face/heart and everything else fell. Under any other circumstances I would have voted for it!

Life is cruel, but the Cup is cruelty itself.

i disagree. i mean, why not flaunt what you absolutely love *and* what means the world to you?
i say go for broke. if folk don't get it, fanjjjje, that's their prob, not yers.
i am telling you i have zero shot of winning this cup this year. and i don't care. i wear it, i flaunt it. yeeehaw.
you might just turn some folk on. a worthy cause, just by its own self.
this is my view. also, my cat spots is like a living heating blanket, and this will not stand. she must move.

Re: Prog Cup '21 Musings
I looked back at a few previous cups and saw that the one that I did absolutely worst in was the damn FOLK cup.
That is my 'field of expertise,' if I have one. With the possible exception of Corp. Whore (and maybe Billy for the Wyrd stuff), there is no one more steeped in this stuff than me. And the response to my absolutely favorite stuff, the very reasons why I'm obsessed with modern interpretations of traditional song? I might as well have served up a Michael McDonald playlist. Absolutely everything I love, dismissed out of hand. My conclusion?
You're all a bunch of cloth-ears.
It's the only logical conclusion.
