Re: BCB Cup 2022 Semi Final 2
A's original 11 are well-chosen - individual and enjoyable - but as with the other semi, the newer additions where they've gone much deeper into the ground don't grab me much at all.
B's new choices are all splendid, and that's a great JLL find!

Re: BCB Cup 2022 Semi Final 2
A beat me in the last round, and whilst I liked its original eight, it definitely feels as if it's getting worse. Had I met this list with its new three I'd be pretty confident of winning I think. Not that its new three are bad necessarily.
Actually the Feiner is bad -a hackneyed and not very interesting attempt at atmospherics that sounds as if it's destined to become the theme tune of a new Netflix drama about the hunt for a serial killer. The Damon track was good though; an arresting, atmospheric track (..if not much of a song).
I have mixed feelings about the Getz. The playing is magical and bewitching -part snake charmer, part lover's lullaby. But I really didn't like the accompanying orchestral arrangement which sounded to me like the kind of weepie music heard in silent films. I found it both distracting and detracting.
So to B which has an appealing unpretentious quality, that gives it a point of difference in this year's competition, but it also continues to play it frustratingly safe. I enjoyed the JLL cover, but it's not as good as either the Kenny Rogers original, or, especially, the Bettye Lavette cover. Crawdaddy Simone is really great and certainly Meek's wildest moment, but a track that's been picked many times before. Best track of the six THO. What is it with Neil Young and BCB cups? Anyway, he whines with his usual dull sincerity through a plodding, unvarying track. He gets picked far too often anyway, and this isn't even a good track.
A because it goes to more interesting places, but it needs to find inspiration again for the final.

Re: BCB Cup 2022 Semi Final 2
I agree almost completely with G here, other than I don't have a problem with Neil being ubiquitous in the cup, particularly when he's pretty universally loved here, and he has an almost endless number of great overlooked songs at every point in his career. (And yes, I consider this one.)
A was probably my favorite list aside from my own in its original 8, and while I agree the success has not been sustained, I'd still be OK with it going all the way.

Re: BCB Cup 2022 Semi Final 2
Both lists are a mixed bag with things I really like and others I'm indifferent about but the additions of B improve things while the only addition on A I liked was Stan Getz and I agree with the comment about the strings which I found unnecessary.
On balance B edges this.

Re: BCB Cup 2022 Semi Final 2
A came into this round ahead on points through being a bit more adventurous and not containing the dreadful Deerhoof. I actually like all 6 of the new choices.
Feiner. I liked this more than most as I'm a sucker for anything anywhere on the Walker/Hawley arc and this proved to be a pleasant slow burner.
Damon. Wild
Getz. Simply gorgeous
Jerry Lee. Liked it but falls a bit between two stools. There's loads of pure country in early Jerry Lee, which I might have preferred. Also I'm a big Mickey Newbury fan and picking the original would have been a braver choice.
Syndicats. A perennial BCB cup standby
Neil. My favourite Neil era is Time Fades Away/Tonight's the night/On The Beach. This is of course great
Both have absolute killer tracks (Impressions/LaVette v Contours/Stone Poneys) but looking at remainder it's a win for...…

B has a few I really like - Pearson, Ronstadt, Undertones, Neil Young but A just edges this one out. Except for the Young I really didn't like the new three on either list.

Re: BCB Cup 2022 Semi Final 2
The new three in list A are the more interesting choices here. Nothing to get too excitied about but new (to me) and pleasant enough.
B's three are more cynical and careerist Joe Meek Psych (check), unexpected cover of Big Lebowski ST tune (check) and a bit of Neil (check)
My stepmum gave me her copy of Time Fades Away (I had the poster up in my bedroom as a teen) and I was desperate to like it but it was all just a bit meh really - apart from the title track which has a bit more spirit.
On that basis I'm going A

I like both's new tracks very much (I was totally unaware of JLL covering that song), so it's the overall impression after all...
