Oh fuck - DUKE OF EARL!

Who put that in there?

Have a listen - this is amazing. I mean, the video is something special, too.

And thanks!

Hall and Oates are aural wallpaper, solely due to over-familiarity. Not bad, just not much more I can get out of a song like She's Gone.

You should have had my childhood AM radio experience..... that was played as much as Fleetwood Mac and the Eagles... meh.

I've always been intrigued by the whole AM thing. It sounds like something I'd be down with, though it's such a subtle (but huge) difference between Fleetwood Mac and the Eagles, so it might be a bit of a minefield!

Because I only really listen to talk radio, there are whole swathes of music that BCB-ers think of as overplayed/pap that I just treat on its own merits. I'm kinda glad about it.

AM radio of the 70's was fine, when I was age six to eleven, but the repetition got to me as i got a bit older and learned a bit more about music. Everything was on constant repeat... so for many of us, we've heard that H&O song at least 300 times, so all impact was either lost or soured.
the Eagles suck.

I've been working through all the lists, noting down the ones I haven't heard, trawling youtube for clips, and ending up with a selection of songs I really like.

There's a couple of shithot Isley Bros songs that seem to catch them between their Motown and bedsheet-soul years - 'I Turned You On', and 'Work To Do'. Fucking ace - that's been the biggest discovery so far. I'm going to investigate further.

The Yellow Magic Orchestra stuff is pretty good.

An early New Order track - 'Dreams Never End', I think - was an unexpected gem.

The Pale Fountains' song makes me want to investigate more.

And Spirit's 'I Got A Line On You', which I think I'd heard before, is now a firm favourite.

Oh, and the Sharon Tandy. I have 'Hold On' by Rupert's People (who were Fleur DeLys, who backed her on this, I think!) - this is slinkier.

I had that on my "wilfully obscure" list a couple of years ago. Where were you then? :x

I've found some nice things - ones that spring to mind from the last couple of days are 'Duke of Earl, and the tracks by Len Barry, Sir John Quarterman, Reporter, one or two others.
Another new Death fan here, too.

At some point I'll look back through all the lists and try to get hold of mp3s of the things I discovered.

Been discussed loads on YY over the years too (one of my 'songs for the weekend' from about five years ago). But then that just shows you that you can never tell what people will know and what they won't.

That song is further proof that the Meters (who backed her on it) are about the best band ever.

I saw her play live several years back; she put on an absolutely jaw-dropping, incredible show. 8-)

EDIT: Oh, and before anyone gets ideas, that track isn't on my cup list.

To fully capture the spirit of the Tings Tings, why not sing-say the above lyrics out loud while tapping out a crude beat on the desk with your finger. To recreate the live experience, do the same but speed the beat up and down erratically while gurning apologetically at an imaginary bandmate.

It's the token Bollywood song of the Cup, I think I saw it on a list either last year or in '09. You should check out the Bollywood thread for more of such classics :)

What's all this Duke of Earl crap

Surely Coan and others are old enough to remember the majestic Darts:

It was only 1979 for goodness sake, are you band wagon jumpers in this music appreciation thing??!!!!!

Of course. Which is why it's such a pleasant surprise to hear the original.
