bona fide classics, well Ray of Light is obviously, EMF was a brain fart should have used Gangsters by The Specials in hindsight.

Just sayin' like.

Yep, spot on Mr G. Christine, ex of 'Mandy and the Mescal Buttons' (and an old school friend ;) ) worked with William Orbit on that one. It's based on a song (Sepheryn) by her uncle:

The last time I saw the puppies, they looked very sad and were heading towards the river with a burlap sack and some rocks.

I was beaten by this list! This one! :

List B

Dear Mr Fantasy, Traffic here
Cellphone's Dead, Beck here
Rattlesnakes, Lloyd Cole and the Commotions here
Smash It Up Parts 1 and 2, The Damned here
Artificial Energy, The Byrds here
The Bottle, Gil Scott Heron here
Primitive Painters, Felt here
The Changeling, The Doors here
Black Steel, Tricky here
Station To Station, David Bowie here
It's Your Thing, The Isley Brothers here
Get Some, Lykke Li here
Man Next Door, Massive Attack here
I Threw It All Away, Bob Dylan here
Hanging Around, The Stranglers here

I mean- come on!

Traffic - OK, nice enough start. Obvious, canon, retro without being a band that separates people, but not a bad start.

Beck - Beck has written the occasional good song I'll admit, but the new stuff on this list is a prime example of when people stopped writing songs and started "building tracks." Meh.

Lloyd Cole - Not my cuppa, but whatever. If not for the fact that my opponent picked the most obvious track. A problem with the whole list, but I take back anything I said about people rewarding adventure. Apparently that was just in the first round.

The Damned - Nice. The equivalent of picking "Satisfaction" as your Stones pick, or maybe "Proud Mary" as your Creedence one. At least it wasn't "New Rose." Why, when I'm not even part of the punk brigade here, do I have to be the one to constantly remind people that they had more than two songs?

The Byrds - Right. The least "Byrdsy" Byrds song. The one Coan likes. Way to pick a band yet not pick them.

Gil Scott Heron - I like this well enough, honestly, but again- can't we dig just a little deeper? Or is it just a hip name to drop?

Felt - Token 90s "alternarock" track. Don't hate 'em, but they're still there to represent something other than just good music.

The Doors - First non-obvious choice by a known band. Too bad it's one of their worst songs.

Tricky - See Beck above. Nice track. I'm not into "tracks."

Bowie and the Isleys are both tracks that I could have just as easily used on my list, so never mind those.

Lykke Li - OK, you're a prostitute. I get it. If this is what passes for newness, again, back to the garage, please.

Massive Attack - Yawn. Another "track."

Dylan - Another decent track. They gave you four or five, I gave you fifteen. Yeah, I could see why twice as many people preferred this one.

The Stranglers - To balance out Felt.

Seriously, if fifteen great tracks, including new ones, classic ones, old nuggets probably not familiar to most, and a nice balance between genres and artists isn't enough for you guys I don't know what is. I'm starting to fear that the winning list and the BCB top hundred (which might be posted around the same time at this rate) are going to basically be the same thing. So much for adventure. I had a great next five planned too. Nice to know they would have been wasted. Next year I'll give you a full list of by-the-numbers crap from the 80s and 90s that I don't even like myself. And you know what? I'll bet you I do better.

So I lose by one vote to the usual assemblage of NME-approved, just-slightly-left-of-centre, old-timers alternative acts.

Of course, the usual assemblage of fuckwads, mired in an idealised past, rolled out of their slow, televisual stupors to affirm once again the rights of balding fat men in their forties to never, ever grow up or be forced outside the narrow aesthetic parameters of those two or three years in the 1980s when they managed to get the occasional root.

I am glad to be shot of this ridiculous cockmeasuring competition.
Goodness gracious me.

Were it that, I am reliably informed you'd have departed in the preliminaries.
