BCB Cup 2011 Round 3 Tie 11 - Replay - Balboa constricted...

Postby the masked man » 25 Feb 2011, 20:18

OK, I don't like running ties over the weekend, but if I leave the round 11 replay until Sunday, it will be Tuesday before round four starts and people will grumble. So I'm going to put it up now and hope we can get this over with.

List A

Diana Ross - I’m Coming Up link
Donovan - Barabajagal link
Steely Dan - My Old School link
The Jackson 5 - Maybe Tomorrow link
The Flaming Lips - Pompeii Am Gotterdammerung link

List B

James Knight & the Butlers – "Save Me" link
Supergrass – "St. Petersburg" link
Phil Upchurch – "The Way I Feel" link
Alton Ellis – "Let Him Try" link
The Soft Boys – "(I Want to Be An) Anglepoise Lamp" link

Bad mood, Pete?

It is precisely because some think the gibbering cretin who compiled list B above is capable of puttting a better list together than my (sadly defeated) parade of wonder, that makes me realise that I don't ever want to win this shitty competition- because it is always won by crap, voted in by delinquent, semi-literate, unthinking philistines.

And in answer to your question, not at all, Andrew.

It pains me to vote against My Old School but I've still got to go with B, which is slightly more in tune with my tastes.

All five tracks are better than anything you managed to come up with in your twenty.

But anyway, this is very, very close for me so I need to give it proper thought.

Definately A. My Old School is enough to see this through, but the Donovan and Flaming Lips additions are very strong too.

B, handily.

That James Knight track is a jam among jams, and would have been in my next five. And Alton Ellis is the man. Plus there's no Steely "Fucking" Dan.

Then it follows that ∀ k ∈ K: K ∈ U ⇒ k ∉ D

This is very tough but if I had to go for my top three from these it would be James Kinght, I fell in love with that track when I first discovered it on a comp years ago and I don't think early 70's funk gets better than that, next would probably be tied between Donovan's great voodoo workout 'Barabajagal' and the slinky, surprising textures of Phil Upchurch, I'm a fan of his and am delighted to see yet another Cadet artist follow the likes of Marlena Shaw, Terry Callier, The Rotary Connection, EWF and Minnie Ripperton in this year's cup.
So that gives B a slight edge, even though I voted for A in the tie. I have a good idea who both are and I've always shared a lot in common with them musically, so would be delighted to see either go through. Sorry to A.
