In fact, it was Porridge that doomed Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads. Clement and La Frenais had just done 7 'pilots' for Ronnie Barker and the BBC really liked the one that became Porridge. The writers didn't have time to do both, so the third series of WHTTLL got ditched.
What had been written so far eventually became the feature film.
