The Newbie Introduction Thread

We seem to have one or two relatively new members on the boards lately and it would appear that they aren't all Sea Of Tunes aliases this time around.

I think it would be nice if they introduced themselves here, told us a little about what they like, put forward any questions they have about the boards and so on, and we can pop open the champagne and show them what a marvellous lot we really are under all the tough talk.

Oh go on then. Even though I introduced myself when I first started posting and you had your chance to point and laugh at the new kid then.

I've fairly wide tastes, have a special place in my heart for the Beach Boys, but love nearly anything with Les Pauls and Marshalls being played very loudly.
If it's a better indication of what I like, recent albums I've played include Sing to God by Cardiacs and Pacific Ocean Blue due to recent posts on here. Also most of Fountains of Wayne's back catalogue, big chunks of a seven-disc Zappa compilation I put together some time ago (mostly instrumental), Freedom Wind by the Explorers Club, Stop Us If You've Heard This One Before by the Wildhearts, and Quadrophenia.

I've a bloody awful memory for names and song titles, and I've not really got much interest in band trivia to be honest so I'll apologise right now for not contributing much on that score. I do however have an insatiable lust for catchy choruses and emotional harmonies. Preferably along with loads of guitar too. I'm very open to band/album recommendations, and have no problem with inflicting my tastes on innocent passers by. I also love the current Shopping List For Loons thread.


As for questions:
Can somebody get my Mum quickly and ask her to bring a clean pair of underpants with her?

My name is Nick. Im a Mojo regular and decided as a few BCBers popped over there, id pop over here.
I listen to most things now, ive become more tolerant as ive grown older. There is a special place in my heart for 60s girl groups, especially the Shangri Las. I also listen to Dan Sartain, Calexico, Sons & Daughters, Surf music, the Detroit garage scene, theme tune, comedy records....blah blah blah..in fact most stuff. Not overly keen on country (the Tammy Wynette variety) and new r&b.
I have jumped straight into the 'mix club' and enjoy the chance to hear other peoples stuff aswell as sending my stuff out.
I play guitar (badly) for relaxation.
Not much else to say really.

OK then. I missed the formal introduction thing a while back as (a) I wasn't sure how much I'd be around but I'd enjoyed some of the threads and felt I could contribute something minor to some query on OK Computer, and (b) I read some posts saying words to the effect that intro threads sucked ... Oh well.

I'm just last month past the half-century, I work from home as a freelance copy-editor and have done so for the past 20+ years. I have a partner, Mrs Gus, who does the same thing but is looking to perhaps train in TEFL as another string to her bow later in the year (quite a bit of work in that line coming up in Glasgow in the near future training refugees etc.).

I live in a ridiculously beautiful part of the Firth of Clyde, about 30 miles from Glasgow. My youth was (mis)spent messing around with bands, singing, playing and roadying, but without much to show for it. I've played guitar and bass off and on for mblmbl years, and a few years ago got into making computer music (both recording and programming), which I'd enjoy more if it didn't mean spending even more of my life staring at a laptop.

I spent some years active in the peace movement in the 1980s, and lived at Faslane Peace Camp for around three years before group dynamics etc. made it untenable. Continued involvement with the peace and environmental movement (Mrs Gus is much more active in that than I am nowadays) included a year job-sharing with Mrs Gus in a job with Greenpeace (whereby hang some tales). Life's been a bit less silly since then, what with coping with two recessions, trying to make a crust etc. etc. No children (through choice). One enormous tabby rescue cat (who is also called Gus).

Musical tastes eclectic, to say the least. I don't tend to analyse it at the same sophisticated level as some posters here, but I often enjoy reading their observations. I'd contribute more, but so often I post something and look back more closely over the thread and see I've paraphrased what someone else has posted, so I tend not to bother as it just comes across as a touch of the "me toos".
