That was a beautiful post, Anna.

You were very kind to me when my mom died, and I'd like to return the favor, but I can't think of anything to say that you don't already know!

I'll make sure to have a KitKat in your dad's honor. He sounds like someone I'd've enjoyed knowing.

Sincere condolences, Minnie. You were lucky to have him as your father.

Someone's been arrested for causing death by criminal negligence now, so it is going to be a sad tale of unsafe working practices in the building trade I guess

Turns out he is one of those people who no one has a bad word for, which is how he always seemed, but nice to have it confirmed that he was a sweetie.

Used to love him and Si pottering around on their bikes eating food, what a job.

Minnie the Minx wrote:My Dad died yesterday morning. We had been looking after him at home, for months, and his wish was to die at home surrounded by family and his death couldn't have been more perfect in that regard. It was peaceful, pain free and he was surrounded by love.
I'm going to be in the UK for a couple more weeks for the funeral and Baron will be heading over soon. I've spent a lot of time away from him in the past few months and I can't wait for him to be back with our family.

I have been bowled over by the superb care and attention that Dad and our family received over the course of his illness, especially in the last few weeks. The palliative care nurses, district nurses, carers, GPs. People who came out in the early hours for frantic phone calls, and sat in the kitchen with the family when times got tough and listened to a family crying. Dad had opted for no treatment and though that meant he wasn't spending his last months going to and fro radiology departments, it did mean that his dignity slipped away in a manner that was dreadful to watch and of course, for him to experience. He had virtually no pain throughout the whole process, but confided to me that he would have traded the debility and lack of dignity for pain on occasion.

Dad was an an avid reader, thinker, antique collector, birdwatcher, walker, lover of mountains, hills and trains. Sarcastic, funny, deadpan. Lover of Volvos, Salvage Hunt's biggest fan, ex-shop steward, spliff enthusiast, crossword completer, cynic. Creator of extraordinary gardens and interiors, his auction picture finds graced the walls of all our houses, making internal landscapes that made sitting in the house a constant pleasure. Hard to think that the frail man that I sat reading to was the same one that carried me on his shoulders on various anti racist marches of the late 1970s, teaching me to shout "FUCK THE NATIONAL FRONT!"

If you have a mind to, next time you eat a Kitkat, a bowl of cornflakes (with full fat milk naturally), chance upon a corn bunting, eagle or curlew, or go up a mountain, have a quick nod to my Dad, who was a personality so huge it's as if Mount Fuji has just been erased. I can't imagine my life's landscape without him, but I am glad he is now at peace.

I’m sorry for your loss Anna. You spoke of your Dad a lot here so I feel like I knew a little about him already. Your post here was truly beautiful. Take care of yourself and your family. I’ve been missing your posts here but knew you were busy. Peace and much love.

OJ Simpson, the former American footballer who was controversially cleared of double murder, has died aged 76, his family says

Orenthal James Simpson rose to fame as a college footballer before playing in the NFL.

In 2008, he was sentenced to 33 years' imprisonment on charges of armed robbery. He was released in 2017.

Are you originally from the Greenwich area then Rob?

Mrs C is a head of a primary school in Plumstead

No, Beckenham, although I was living in Blackheath at the time, sharing a house with a friend -first time living away from home, whist taking a year out before going to college. Worked at Woolwich Library for six months.

Del and his friend Brian, a very good guitarist, joined the library a short while just before I was finishing there. They were very friendly with the girl I was house sharing with, (who also worked at the library), and would come round and play records. One of them scratched my original copy of Led Zep III.

Do I know you? I grew up in Beckenham, more the Penge side though (love Maple Road)

I'm sorry to hear about your dad, Anna. I know how much you loved him. I remember driving up to the Golden Gate Bridge on your first visit and you telling me your dad had always wanted to see it in person and you were going to get to walk over it. Made me tear up, at the time, and appreciate what I had in my backyard.

More and more people in my life are dying. I'm 62, going to be 63 in June, I get it. Two close friends I've know since I was nine have died in the last six months, and of course, my ex, who I still talk to and ask for advice.

I'm just posting, not about me, but to recognize how important other people are in others' lives and I know your dad was important to you and helped shape who you are.

It's bit fairly quiet on the RIP front recently.
Am I jinxing it now?
