Have you ever been to a fan convention?

Postby GoogaMooga » 30 Sep 2021, 14:09

Have you ever been to a fan convention? Ever geeked out in San Diego or any other city that might host such an event? I know Beach Boys UK used to host an annual Beach Boys convention, with special guests, stalls, music, films, and so on. Not counting trade marts, I've been to comics conventions in London, Angoulême, and Copenhagen, but now that all the great artists are dead or retired, I don't go anymore. I am quite content with the few that I have attended, got to meet some legends and got some cool autographs and even a few sketches.

The largest comics convention in the world is held every year in San Diego, where they give out the Eisner Awards, comics' equivalent of the "Oscar".

I once went to a convention for people who used to like agricultural machinery. It was full of ex-tractor fans.

At the last vegetarian convention I went to, there was a girl who insisted she knew me but I told her I never met herbivore.

There’s a naturist convention in Austin next week. I might go if I’ve got nothing on.

Pre Covid, we used to go to Comic Cons several times a year in both Toronto and Detroit. We mainly went to purchase comics but did enjoy meeting Carmine Infantino as well as Ramona Fradon.

I doubt if we'll get to go to Detroit this year but this is a good one ... https://www.motorcitycomiccon.com/

It is great fun to watch the fans who "dress up" at the comic cons.

I had thought about organising a Fruit and Tool convention, but I couldn’t nail down a date.

Went to a fan convention for seals who balance balls on their noses. I won’t go again. The whole thing was a bloody circus.

I wanted to go to a fan convention but had to turn around. I was blown away by the lack of social distancing among other things.

When I was a kid, at the peak of my baseball card collecting life, we would go to Arlington (in DFW) for baseball card/memorabilia "conventions." Much like record conventions, just a lot of people selling stuff. It was great, much like pre-internet record collecting, it was a way to go well beyond what was available in your local stores. I never had a lot of money to blow on that stuff, but it was still pretty amazing and fun for me. They would also have baseball legends signing autographs. Over the years, I got autographs from Bob Feller, Mickey Mantle, Lou Brock, Bob Gibson, and a few others. An asshole kid conned me out of my Mickey Mantle 8x10 back in the day. We didn't go all the way to DFW specifically for that, one of my friend's grandparents lived in Arlington so we would go up there for a week or two every summer and go to Six Flags and a Rangers game or two in the funky old Arlington stadium.

I don't know much about baseball, but I know that Mickey Mantle card. If it was in good shape, you lost a fortune!
