Rice, corn, or 'taters?

Whether you call them "crisps" or "chips", crispy snacks are just the ticket when you are hungry for fun. When I lived in Brighton in 76-77, I attended secondary school, and there we had a tuck shop. All the kids would snack on mini bags of potato chips in the lunch break; they were only 7 pence a bag, as far as I recall. The brand of choice was "Golden Wonder", and the kids would always, but always, choose salt and vinegar flavor. No fancy, smokey BBQ flavor, just basic salt and vinegar. I was more a chocolate eater, MARS was my thing. MARS is still my thing all these years later, but since then I have added chips to my repertoire. Specifically, rice-based crispy snacks. Potato chips are a little bit boring, and give you a "lazy" feeling after you finish a bag. The puffy rice-based snacks, on the other hand, feel good to eat. They are definitely an Asian specialty - kropok, prawn crackers, you know the deal. And I am lucky that we've got two Asian groceries in town, so I am sorted for those snacks. Then there are the corn-based snacks, they come third for me - Bugles, Doritos, that sort of thing. But really, nachos are too crunchy, and the fun of dipping in guacamole has long since worn off. Which brings us back to the rice-based snack, a clear winner. Or what do you think? We need to get to the bottom of this, so please answer my poll. :)

I see Golden Wonder have changed their design, '76 was a long time ago:

Here is my current fave, a Korean spicy onion ring crispy snack called Nongshim (always sold out):

I’ve read some bollocks in my time but this is some top tier nonsense.

You would be shocked. The UK is now firmly under the baleful influence of Walkers. More proof of how capitalism is a con and it is rarely the best product that comes to hold the monopoly.

Pretty much every other crisp brand is superior to Walkers and yet they are ubiquitous. Although Golden Wonder still exist, you can't get them anywhere.

It pisses me off. :x

If it's any consolation, I've seen the gourmet Kettle brand of thick cut potato chips in London. I only recently found out they are Danish!

Tortilla chips are not the same as corn chips, though I suppose I could see how one might think that. I disagree that they are too crunchy, and I also dispute the notion that the simple pleasures of perfect guacamole could ever wear off.

Rainbow Root crisps are getting increasingly popular, more widely available and lower in price.
You have to love the actual root (or tuber) vegetable itself for you to like them.
Delicious.

But surely they are both corn-based, even if they differ greatly in taste and texture.

I've tried various veg/root chips and like them. That should have been a poll option.

One of my favorite chips is made my Lundman Family Farms who grow rice about two hours north of here. They make a rice and corn based chip that is really good and three or four flavored versions.

Frazzles (or any supermarket brand) are the winners- today ,tomorrow, yesterday, forever. ASDA own brand are ridiculously good.

The unfortunately named Fiddlers crisp from up the road in Burscough are the best potato crisps, especially the black pudding and mustard variety. All non-potato things are inferior shit, unless they are bacon wheat crunchies.

Here's a good mix, not just in shape, but also in taste and texture, puffy and paprika seasoned. Whoever that "Jørgen" guy is, he knows what he likes. KIMS is Denmark's leading crisp producer; with one of their bags it's always Friday night. KIMS was founded in 1960 and to me is a symbol of modern Denmark, the 1960s, when our eating habits changed.

Bacon wheat crunchies are fabulous it’s true but I always preferred Worcester Sauce flavour. I read somewhere they were taken off the market because the flavourings were found to be high in potential carcinogens - not sure how true that is!

In fact wasn’t there a Spicy Tomato flavour too?

I don't know, but now I'm thinking whether the absolute filth of Nice n' Spicy Nik Naks should be thrown into the mix.
