Re: President Donald J. Trump
I saw a chilling interview on Charlie Rose with a conservative pundit who suggested that Trump really could be a transformative President who also freezes out the left by passing infrastructure and focusing significant (infrastructure) work on the most distressed inner cities, building the wall and then giving the law abiding aliens the equivalent of amnesty (but not citizenship), and passing something like national health care. He may be on to something and I think they are all ideas Trump could get behind (and already has, to some degree). The trick is to get the right wingers in Congress to go along with the necessary spending to make it happen. His theory was that if Dems don't take the Congress back in '18, they're fucked indefinitely.

Re: President Donald J. Trump
A lot of that is possible Baron, but it would be hard to pull off.
The biggest issue he'd have would be congress. McConnell just wants power, so he'd fall into place. But Ryan really wants to remake the government in his image. He won't approve all of that spending without getting his hands on Medicare or Social Security.
Even if Trump can get the leadership, he'll have some GOP deficit hawks to get past. Then...even if all of that comes together, he'all have to successfully administer a huge works program. Not so easy - and there will be winners and losers. Those left out will have their resentments. Finally, the ballooning deficit will freak a lot of folks out.
I think our biggest worry is that he's likely to use this investigation of the voting system to entrench his power.

Weren't some of you scoffing at me a few days ago for predicting Trump would pull a Bernie and do infrastructure rebuilding, helping to fix up the inner cities and most shockingly of all do national health care??? And I think the Republicans will fall in line. You know why? He scares them. They're the wimps and he's a bully.

Sooner or later the Trumpster is going to work out that he can easily get people back to work and put the former liberal elite in its place by getting anyone who supported him and needed a job to build and staff prisons filled to the rafters with those who detest and despise him.

Re: President Donald J. Trump
I agree with Davey that it's unlikely he can get all that through the House as there's no palatable way for them to pay for it, AND because there's likely lots of Tea Party people who won't go along with everything.
The main point is, despite the record levels of outrage on the left, I could see us being marginalized by a Clintonesque triangulation, as Trump is not ideological. My entire fulminating Facebook feed might underestimate the things Trump could do that would box them out and marginalize them even more than they already are, in terms of political power. Unprecedented marches, notwithstanding. The interview crystallized that unease in me.
Ultimately, he's so unstable that I think it's likely he'll continue to be his own worst enemy, and he'll have problems from Congress.
I may have quarreled with specifics, but not the overall sentiment.

Talk is cheap, Jimbo. Sure, he SAYS he's going to do all this stuff, but it's not easy as that.

Let U be the set of all united sets, K be the set of the kids and D be the set of things divided.
Then it follows that ∀ k ∈ K: K ∈ U ⇒ k ∉ D
Then it follows that ∀ k ∈ K: K ∈ U ⇒ k ∉ D

Why not? You think Trump gives a shit about conservative orthodoxy that isnt populist, nationalist "America First?" He extends federal insurance benefits to all (not Obamacare, not socialism because its insurance). He builds his wall, toughens visa requirements for people coming from the Middle East (an illusory achievement anyway), then says, now that we've got a wall and tighter restrictions, the law abiding aliens here can stay, but can't become citizens. Win win.
I'm not talking about housing, I'm talking about focusing infrastructure dollars on the inner cities.
But like Davey says, it's more likely that Congress won't let him, and he could easily flame out by acting crazy and megalomaniacal.

Pah! I don't see any of this happening.

Re: President Donald J. Trump
We'll all just have to wait and see.
Meanwhile on the Young Turks they saw that Trump had tweeted about the high crime in Chicago and that he might have to send in the "Feds." It turns out that at the same time he tweeted the O'Reilly Factor was on and Bill and guest were talking about the the high crime in Chicago and the possibility of sending in the Feds. Trump is so impulsive he tweets what he sees on TV when it's on. No advisors, no study, no mediation … O'Reilly said it, sounds like a good idea, and Trump tweets his newest policy idea.

No, let's conjecture wildly based on inadequate or made-up facts.

Re: President Donald J. Trump
To be honest I'm more worried about the people behind Trump, most of them sound dodgy as fuck. Trump will make the final decision on things but I'd be worried if he doesn't get all the necessary info to do so or if one or two of them will purposefully hold back info to influence his decision.

Re: President Donald J. Trump
As we learned with Obamacare, a President can "do" all sorts of things people say they want and end up in worse shape for having done so.
What kinds of jobs would a Trump infrastructure bill create? Where are they? Who would benefit? Are these good paying jobs? Are they temporary?
Hiring a bunch of folks to build a wall on the southern border won't help the folks in the rust belt who think he's opening the mines again.
Similarly on health care...we've all seen what a quagmire that can be. You think Ryan and McConnell will pass single payer? If he does get a bill through that covers everyone (or close to it), he will need to bring costs down. The only way to do that is to dump most of the regulations that guaranteed a basic level of care. So sure...he can extend something along the lines of universal catastrophic care to all. That would work well - as long as nobody gets sick.
Personally I think he'll punt healthcare back to the states. I don't see that as a big political winner for him.
Similarly- I don't see Amnesty with no citizenship as a winner for him. It still leaves a permanent underclass to blame for society's problems. Nobody will be happy with that. The right will resent the presence of "lawbreakers" - the left will decry the half-measure.

Sounds like a win to me (from The Man's point of view)

I'm speaking electorally.
From the asshole perspective, we'd still be paying to educate their kids and handing out government services. Nothing short of mass deportations will satisfy all the conservative loudmouth uncles out there.

Re: President Donald J. Trump
Anyhow - Trump will be brought down by Trump. His M.O. is to win by keeping everyone around him in a permanent state of insecurity. That's exactly what people hate most from their government.
His support will dwindle to nothing as people realize that they don't like feeling nervous 24/7. Meanwhile Ryan and McConnell can hold the Emoluments clause over his head. They have the power to impeach at any time, so he'll have to call to their tune. If not, they'll hand the ball to Pence.

Trump says "infrastructure" and he means "pipelines".
he's got a different word for everything.
seriously, that dude is hitting the ground running. remember when executive orders and swift judicial appointments were frowned upon?
it seems like only last week!
