Track one is a song from the first Darling Buds album, a favorite of mine.
Track two is a moody bluegrass flavored track, with a chorus of “feels like someone’s walking on my grave.”
Track three is a nice slow pop song built on lush synthesizer drones.
Track four is a cool surf instrumental with a bit of spy soundtrack flavor thrown in.
Track five is a mid-tempo soul ballad with a distinct Motown flavor.
Track six is a tuff modern garage rocker that sounds like The Muffs.
Track seven is a sunny pop song sung by a woman making nice use different keyboard sounds. Great song!
Track eight is a tuff 60’s (or 60’s style) garage nugget. Not sure who the artist is.
Track nine is a live gothy kind of thing with indistinguishable lyrics. Cocteau Twins?
Track ten is an extremely groovy horn-driven instrumental that sounds like the theme song to a cool 70’s cop tv show.
Track eleven is a pretty folksy number sung by a woman.
Track twelve is a rocker sung in a language I can’t identify.
Track 13 is a mid-tempo rocker with some nice slide guitar. Has an early/mid-70’s good-time AM hits kind of vibe.
Track 14 is a nice soul/doo-wop kind of number.
Track 15 is a funky instrumental that sounds like The Meters to me. Love the bass and organ on this especially.
Track 16 is a great oldie I remember first hearing soon after I joined BCB: “One Fine Morning,” though for the life of me I can’t recall the artist.

A very enjoyable selection, with only a few that were familiar to me. Thanks!

Yep

Track two is a moody bluegrass flavored track, with a chorus of “feels like someone’s walking on my grave.”

Walking On My Grave - The Cartwrights, a California country band (1995)

Track three is a nice slow pop song built on lush synthesizer drones.

Red Planet - Alvvays (2014)

Track four is a cool surf instrumental with a bit of spy soundtrack flavor thrown in.

1960s Peruvian instrumental band The Bellrings

Track five is a mid-tempo soul ballad with a distinct Motown flavor.

The Temptations with a 1965 single Since I Lost My Baby

Track six is a tuff modern garage rocker that sounds like The Muffs.

Good ear, that's them.

Track seven is a sunny pop song sung by a woman making nice use different keyboard sounds. Great song!

Come Back Margaret by Camera Obscura from an album I like Let's Get Out Of This Country.

Track eight is a tuff 60’s (or 60’s style) garage nugget. Not sure who the artist is.

You Treated Me Bad - The JuJus, from Vol 1 of the Pebbles series.

Track nine is a live gothy kind of thing with indistinguishable lyrics. Cocteau Twins?

You're right, it's the Cocteau Twins from a live 1995 Paris show.

Track ten is an extremely groovy horn-driven instrumental that sounds like the theme song to a cool 70’s cop tv show.

Instrumental group The Black Exotics from 2007.

Track eleven is a pretty folksy number sung by a woman.

Another one of the Rose Melberg (Tiger Trap, Brave Irene, Knife Pleats) fronted groups The Softies.

Track twelve is a rocker sung in a language I can’t identify.

Here I follow Canadian twee with Norwegian hard rock. The group is 90s band Glueficer.

Track 13 is a mid-tempo rocker with some nice slide guitar. Has an early/mid-70’s good-time AM hits kind of vibe.

A later single (1974) by The Guess Who called Star Baby.

Track 14 is a nice soul/doo-wop kind of number.

Doo Wop group the Drew-Vells from 1963.

Track 15 is a funky instrumental that sounds like The Meters to me. Love the bass and organ on this especially.

Thunder Chicken - The Mighty Imperials, a four piece instrumental band with nobody above the age of 16.

Track 16 is a great oldie I remember first hearing soon after I joined BCB: “One Fine Morning,” though for the life of me I can’t recall the artist.

The is one hit wonder Lighthouse with their one hit (1971).

A very enjoyable selection, with only a few that were familiar to me. Thanks!

A new batch of entertaining tunes has come my way.

1. A catchy and atmospheric offering from what sounds like a four piece band. I like the moody echoy vocals and there's some nice bass and guitar.
2. Jangly guitar, sounds like a familiar voice. I like the tasteful horn and the guitar solo.
3. Modern girl group sound, fuzz guitar, I like this.
4. Great bass intro, British? I'm not crazy about the singer but the song's not bad.
5. This track wouldn't play at all.
6. Nice indie song, kinda generic. I did like it more each time I heard it.
7. Dense, staccato indie/altie song. British? Odd carnivaly bridge, interesting song.
8. I think I've heard this before but I'm coming up with who it is. 80s or 90s I'm guessing. Interesting.
9. Driving upfront drums, alternative sensibility. I like some of the effects. The vocals are a little buried.
10. Jazzy, moody, tinkley piano. The bass is standout. Smoke filled dive bar stuff.
11. Well played instrumentation, vocals are a little too buried. Not a lot going on but I like it.
12. Love the interplay of the piano and bass, drums. I like this a lot, a highlight. Insistent and rich.
13. Wall of sound synthesization. I can't make out the vocals but that doesn't matter, I like it.
14. A song relating a dream about riding a tsunami. Death and destruction, spoken word parts, good singing and playing. Epic and tragic.
15. Jangly guitar, British invasion feel. Another highlight, good finish.

Thanks mixer. I enjoyed it and I'm looking forward to the reveal.

1. A catchy and atmospheric offering from what sounds like a four piece band. I like the moody echoy vocals and there's some nice bass and guitar.

This is the Chills and the single Pink Frost from 1982, haunting and majestic and well, chilling ... "She won't move and I'm holding her hand"

2. Jangly guitar, sounds like a familiar voice. I like the tasteful horn and the guitar solo.

Sneaky Feelings and the classic Husband House

3. Modern girl group sound, fuzz guitar, I like this.

The 3Ds with bass player Denise taking lead vocals, was lucky enough to tour NZ with this great band. Kiwi guitar god David Mitchell on guitar.

4. Great bass intro, British? I'm not crazy about the singer but the song's not bad.

Flying Nuns the Bats and Claudine

5. This track wouldn't play at all.

Well that sucks, it was supposed be Stereo Bus and the epic shoe gaze of Don't Open Up Your Eyes

6. Nice indie song, kinda generic. I did like it more each time I heard it.

The Chills again and the title track from the Soft Bomb album from 92

7. Dense, staccato indie/altie song. British? Odd carnivaly bridge, interesting song.

The Verlaines and the wonderful Death and the Maiden

8. I think I've heard this before but I'm coming up with who it is. 80s or 90s I'm guessing. Interesting.

Not Given Lightly by Flying Nuns patron saint of the 4 track the semi famous Chris Knox

9. Driving upfront drums, alternative sensibility. I like some of the effects. The vocals are a little buried.

The Clean, one of the bands responsible for the whole Dunedin sound and Billy Two - Flying Nun - buried vocals a speciality.

10. Jazzy, moody, tinkley piano. The bass is standout. Smoke filled dive bar stuff.

The Chills yet again, what can I say, along with the Clean probably the greatest Kiwi band of all time, from the Soft Bomb album The Entertainer.

11. Well played instrumentation, vocals are a little too buried. Not a lot going on but I like it.

X from NY Resident kiwis Bailter Space - the melodies are there just under a million layers of distorted Rickenbacker

12. Love the interplay of the piano and bass, drums. I like this a lot, a highlight. Insistent and rich.

The Clean classic Point That Thing Somewhere Else recorded Live (Slush Fund Version)

13. Wall of sound synthesization. I can't make out the vocals but that doesn't matter, I like it.

Bleeding Star from the JPS Experience

14. A song relating a dream about riding a tsunami. Death and destruction, spoken word parts, good singing and playing. Epic and tragic.

Voom - personal favorites and the song Sad Surfing Scenario from their wonderful Now I Am Me , last saw them playing to maybe 50 people at some god forsaken Irish Bar off K Road in Auckland, a sad fate for criminally ignored Buzz and his fantastic band. Such is the doom of kiwi musicians.

15. Jangly guitar, British invasion feel. Another highlight, good finish.

StraightJacket Fits and their version of Laughing Leonard Cohens So Long Marianne from the Hail album.

Thanks mixer. I enjoyed it and I'm looking forward to the reveal.

So this was a somewhat indulgent mix of New Zealand indie/alt/cult/whatever classics, mostly from the famous/infamous Flying Nun label but not all.

Pink Frost The Chills
Husband House Sneaky Feelings Send You
Beautiful Things 3D's Old Enough to Know Better
Claudine The Bats The Bats: Volume 1
Don't Open Your Eyes The Stereo Bus The Stereo Bus
Soft Bomb The Chills Soft Bomb
Death & The Maiden The Verlaines You're Just Too Obscure for Me
Not Given Lightly Chris Knox Seizure
Billy Two The Clean Anthology
The Entertainer The Chills Soft Bomb
X Bailter Space B.E.I.P.
Point That Thing Somewhere Else (Slush Fund Version) The Clean Getaway (Deluxe 2016 Remaster)
Bleeding Star Jps Experience Bleeding Star
Sad Surf Senario Voom Now I Am Me
So Long Marianne Straitjacket Fits Hail

Glad you enjoyed it Nick, it was a real blast putting all these together on one disc.

This was a really enjoyable listen, an interesting CD of a cover versions from Revolver.
Hard to beat the original of course, but there are some great attempts , most successful, a couple not so much but all interesting to hear.

1 A not good version of Taxman - at first I thought it was “Start” by the Jam.

2. Eleanor Rigby well this is much better, damn good actually, the riff works well on electric guitar

3. Im Only Sleeping - Great song, not a great version of it

4. Fucking great version of “Love You To”
Love this and am interested to see who this is.

5. Here There and Everywhere
This is ok, this got better the more I listened to it, it sounds a lot like Nico, not sure if it actually is

6.Yellow Submarine
Raucous live version, weird kind of Irish folk version with operatic singing - doesn’t really work for me

7. She Said She Said
Ok , version, not bad but not great either

8. Good Day Sunshine
Pretty good, true to the original version

9. And Your Bird Can Sing
Sounds like Paul Weller , another pretty faithful version

10. For No One
Lovely countryish version of this sounds kinda like Emmylou or Dolly Parton.
Great Version, beautiful vocal.

11. Doctor Robert
Nice version with very groovy jazzy flute, and a cool vocal

12. I Want To Tell You
Rocky version of this, the vocalist sounds kind of familiar, but not sure who it is.

13. Got To Get You Into My Life
Not so keen on this, lacks the punch of the horn section

14. Tomorrow Never Knows
Nice kind of electro indian dance version of this, obviously hard to beat the original, but not bad.

So this was a lot of fun to listen to, nice concept, and interested to find out who is singing what.
Thanks to my mixer, great job!

So what have we here then Miss Minxy. Well let’s see shall we.
1) Lots of things like this I hear I dislike, but this has a lovely jangly pop veneer that really lifts it and I ended up quite enjoying it
2) It ain’t junk if it’s got the funk.
3) A good old fashioned thrash. Hard to make too great a musical case but sounds great if you’re in the right mood.
4) Can’t fault the playing but it was a case of (a phrase I’ve used before) OK I’ve heard the intro you can start now, Didn’t hate it, just found it boring.
5) This on the other hand is fabulous. Girl / power pop with a great Chrissie Hynde style swagger. Love it.
6) I know I must sound like a right miserable old git sometimes but there really are loads and load of things I like. I’m easy to please – honest. You just seem to have the knack of pushing my buttons. One of which is the sort of whiny foppish vocals as we have here (Jarvis Cocker is a prime example ). Actually having said that I enjoyed this up to a point, vocal stylings aside.
7) This starts off like some weird mash up of Black Angel’s Death Song and Ghost Riders In The Sky !! The hint of off the wall madness is what won me over.
8) I love discovering new stuff via Mix Club of course, but it’s always a joy when an old classic suddenly appears from the speakers, and you realise how long it is since you’ve played it. S&G – America
9) I should of course be able to tell whether this is Ferry or Sylvain (pretty sure it’s one or the other), but I really hate that vocal style, although I’ve relented a bit on Sylvain where he’s in that Scott Walker/Richard Hawley zone. Just found this a bit of a dirge I’m afraid. (miserable old git strikes again !)

Thanks Anna. I did enjoy this for the most part with only a couple that didn’t strike home and I really really really liked track 5.

Now then! sorry for the delay!

Track 1 -Mott the Hoople! All The Way To Memphis - Yes, yes! Yes!
Track 2- Now then - I don't know this song but it involves Memphis ( I see a pattern!) and it sounds exactly like Terence Trent D'Arby...hmmm..
Track 3- Alabama Song! I see where this is going..
Track 4 - A nice enough soft pop song about monsters and angels and I swear I recognise the vocals, but can't quite nail em down...
Track 5 - Paul Weller! *heart emoji* One of my favourites by him too.
Track 6- Oh goodness this is lovely. Love the strings- and the woodwind- if I didn't know better, would think this was Siouxsie!
Track 7 - This is also sweet - although a way off the genre I usually enjoy.
Track 8 - Fantastic cheery little ditty - that I have no clue of the origin of
Track 9 - This is a ska track that I can only think is very modern as I have no idea who it is at all. I don't think I'm keen. It sounds like Green Day dicking about in their garage.
Track 10: Sweet, mournful male/female duet about parting - no idea who this is at all
Track 11: RONETTES!
Track 12: THE ASSOCIATES!
Track 13: more than acceptable reggae
Track 14: Jesus, this is FANTASTIC! Who is it?? I sounds a little like Marc Almond! Oh, I love it!

Wow this was quite a collection Paul and this disc is going straight into the car. I really enjoyed it. I am especially keen to learn who is responsible for tracks 2, 6, and 14 which is fucking great. Thank you so much!

I actually selected track 2 first but then thoight this was an obvious choice to kave a 1-2 opening salvo

Track 2- Now then - I don't know this song but it involves Memphis ( I see a pattern!) and it sounds exactly like Terence Trent D'Arby...hmmm..

It is TTD, but if you were wondering why you haven't heard much from him recenly, he's now recording as Sananda Maitreya and has been for years. A whole stack of albums all available on Amazon

Track 3- Alabama Song! I see where this is going..

No you don't ! Well I guess you know the Bowie version. I'm more familiar with The Doors version, but this is how it should sound, or at least originally sounded with the full flavour of Berlin cabaret decadence. THis is actually the composer's wife Lotte Lenya

Track 4 - A nice enough soft pop song about monsters and angels and I swear I recognise the vocals, but can't quite nail em down...

Voice of The Beehive. You probaby remeber some of their singles like Don't Call Me Baby, I love all the album tracks too
#
Track 5 - Paul Weller! *heart emoji* One of my favourites by him too.

Glad it's not just me. I love this track. The album may fall short of Wildwood and STanley Road but this is a real standout

Track 6- Oh goodness this is lovely. Love the strings- and the woodwind- if I didn't know better, would think this was Siouxsie!

Ren Harvieu. Not a well known name yet, but I love that amongst all the female artists who want to sell you their angsst (not that I can't get with some of them) there's someone writing string laden lovely pop ballads like this, as though we're back in the golden age of Dionne and Dusty et al

Track 7 - This is also sweet - although a way off the genre I usually enjoy.

Big Thief. Rorshach started a thread recently and whilst many approved there were many for whom the voice was a deal breaker, but I love it.

Track 8 - Fantastic cheery little ditty - that I have no clue of the origin of

From a comp. The style here is Highlifr from the west of Africa, Nigeria and particularly Ghana. This guy goes by the name of Sir Victor Uwaifo, but I'd somehow bet he's never met her maj.

Track 9 - This is a ska track that I can only think is very modern as I have no idea who it is at all. I don't think I'm keen.

The Interrupters. Oh well.
It sounds like Green Day dicking about in their garage.
OUCH

Track 10: Sweet, mournful male/female duet about parting - no idea who this is at all

Another famous son of and actually good friends with Rufus. THis is Teddy "son of Richard" Thompson. This is from a duet album with female singer Kelly Jones.

Track 11: RONETTES!

Indeed

Track 12: THE ASSOCIATES!

Indeed

Track 13: more than acceptable reggae

U Roy

Track 14: Jesus, this is FANTASTIC! Who is it?? I sounds a little like Marc Almond! Oh, I love it!

Isn't it though. I was floored by this when I first heard it. It is Marc ALmond from the album Orpheus in Exile, the songs of Vadim Kozin who is kind of the Russian Brel. I thought this was particularly apt for these troubled times with its theme of separation (here Russian exile) like the opening line "It's been a while that we were last together", and then later "Do not believe that this long time and distance made me forget about you my dear friends"

Wow this was quite a collection Paul and this disc is going straight into the car. I really enjoyed it. I am especially keen to learn who is responsible for tracks 2, 6, and 14 which is fucking great. Thank you so much!

You are as ever welcome.
