We watched the first one on Alibi last year and didn't watch any more. Nicola played herself .....again......monotone, boring, and the story was uninspiring. BBC, is that the best you can do? As for salted liquorice, this is a man who would quite happily flush a box of liquorice all sorts down the toilet. Horrible stuff.

I knew I’d spelt liquorice incorrectly.

Don’t like liquorice, good grief I love the stuff, especially the really nice packets you get from Lakeland, although I can’t remember the last time I actually had any, don’t eat sweets at all really.

To be honest I was being kind in my appraisal of NW and the programme. At least she’s not as twitchy as she normally is, drives me up the wall with all that ‘emotional’ twitching. It must be pretty bad because my wife who likes NW doesn’t even want to watch another episode.

.

I watched them all but they weren’t great. She was much better in Unforgotten.

Somebody Somewhere on HBO. Extraordinary stuff.
I don’t think I would understood it at all had I not moved to the US. Well worth viewing.

Poker Face (2023, Peacock series)

A young woman (Natash Lyonne) with the unerring gift of being able to tell if someone is lying or not finds herself on the run after she ruins a crooked casino manager who murdered her friend. On her flight she meets new people, solves new murders with her innate detecting skills, and tries to stay one step ahead of her crooked casino owner pursuers. Entertaining series with a pleasantly retro 70's detective show feel.

Very enjoyable. Not all the stories are great, but Natasha Lynne is excellent

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023, theatrical release)

Image

Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford and cgi Harrison Ford) returns to action immediately after his formal retirement from teaching, trying to keep an ancient artifact created by Archimedes out of the hands of intransigent Nazis still seeking the restoration of the Reich in 1969. This time he is partnered with his God-daughter (Phoebe Waller-Bridge) and some kid who can fly airplanes like a daredevil pilot even though he's never actually flown. The first act of the movie, set during WWII with cgi Harrison Ford feels and looks like an Indiana Jones video game. It doesn't get terribly better after that. As well as Ford has aged, it really is hard to buy him as an action hero at 80-odd years old. Every action sequence looks like something we've seen before, whether in a previous movie in this series or in the James Bond franchise or other. Phoebe Waller-Bridge provides the only real spark to the movie. The preposterous premise of the movie sets up a preposterous finale which seems like something that only could have happened when the scriptwriters learned all of their science fiction from Marvel movies. All in all, a disappointment which seems especially pointless now, already badly performing at the box office, and whose failure has already launched dozens of schadenfreude-laced reaction Youtube videos by the usual assortment of outraged white guys denouncing "woke" Hollywood/Disney.
Where would rock 'n' roll be without feedback?

"Slow Horses" with Gary Oldman, about a rag tag group of MI5 outcasts, loving it. Up to the Season 1 Finale and things are really heating up.

Just finished season 1, now on season 2 and really enjoying it. Really liked season 1 with all the ‘slow horses’ characters having their own very identifiable personalities.

Elvis (2022)

Given that this is a Baz Lurhmann project, this movie often comes across like a very long music video, which I didn't mind terribly because it's pretty fun even if sometimes ridiculously over the top. All the dramatic beats you would expect in an Elvis biopic were there, from Col. Parker's eyes lighting up with dollar bill signs when he first learns Elvis is white, to Elvis being turned on to pills, and later rebelling at being turned into something he never wanted to be. I think it's a nice touch that the Parker character narrates the story and is not presented as an obvious villain, so that a viewer with no knowledge of the subject might at first think that Col. Tom Parker was just a benign, helpful, fatherly figure to Elvis. Their complex relationship defines the dramatic tension of this movie, and Elvis' sad decline in his later years is not glossed over. None of it would mean anything if I didn't buy Austin Butler as Elvis, and I absolutely did.

I’ve never had any interest in Elvis at all really - either his life or music - but this did change things. Like you, I bought Austin totally as Elvis, though the real star was Hanks. What a performance!

I'll third it. Well written, well acted, extremely funny. One of Harrison Ford's best performances

Hope there is a second.

We watched this on your recommendation and it's great, thanks for the tip!
