I don't know how far you want to go back, but the original (1974) Die Hard and Dirty Harry pictures were great.
Depends on what you call an action film too. The first two Terminators are superb, so are the first two Mad Max movies with Gibson. The remake with Tom Hardy was good as well. All of those movies could be called sci-fi or apocalyptic too. Westerns are good to scratch your macho itch. Try The Unforgiven, The Wild Bunch, or The Magnificent Seven.
And closer to home, there's always tried-and-trues like Michael Caine in Get Carter, A Clockwork Orange, or even something fun like Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels or Snatch. Nor really 'action' films, but close enough. The pacing could pass for action at least.
All great films and I’ve seen them all except Clockwork Orange. I think I would find the sexual assault scene too distressing
Max Max was one I struggled with - I’m not that keen on Mel Gibson nor that aggressive futuristic scene. I don’t think I saw the second and thereafter
The Dirty Harry stuff is super…. Punk
Clint plays a very old drugs mule in a film I saw recently- that is very good
The Mule on Netflix.
