Two episodes in ...so far, excellent. Being filmed in black and white gives it that real period feel, and Andrew Scott is excellent in the lead role. Forget the boyish charm of Matt Damon in the film, this Ripley is a cold hearted conman

Watched the first episode, pretty good so far, although I can't remember anything about the film. Without a doubt the black and white adds a degree of drama and authenticity to the 60s' feel.

I was on a ship travelling to Australia around this time and we docked at Naples for a short while, enough time for us to travel round and form an impression and remember some of the sounds emanating from the air waves.

I love the photography. It's not just that it evokes the period but also that it's stunningly good. It reminds me of The Third Man.

I'm less impressed by the rest of it. I think the dialogue's weak and I just don't believe in the relationships. The Ripley character has no charm and I don't believe the rich kid would have taken such a shine to him.

That's a problem with the book though, isn't it?

In terms of the pace and the cinematography and all the rest of it that a drama series can control, I think it's a really well done series.
You could pause it at any point, take a screenshot and you'd have an expertly framed photograph.

Sure, but it doesn't matter what is responsible for the weakness of the series (in my opinion). I'm not going to watch something I eon't enjoy much just because they chose to make nice pictures out of a crap book.
