Sure, Kath, feel free to host the next 10 rounds. In a way, those 70s effects were a lot more impressive - and dangerous! We were all wowed by Terminator 2 and the first CGI effects, but I think in general those effects are cheating, and the over-reliance on them has just turned us into a blasé audience.

welllll, i tend to agree. but people who do things well... they do things well. some cgi is stellar; most of it is crap. some practical FX are stellar; most, crap. and i grew up being able to see the strings on the flying saucers and the cardboard cutout towns and hot wheels tanks on giant monster movies. i mean, i am *still* a harryhausen freak with the stop-frame. when i was a kid, it was phenomenal. gotta admit, so is terminator 2. so many movies, though, just do not care about blowing folks away or hiring the people that really care.

i guess my main point is that you hafta appreciate the next level stuff. the stuff that changes the game, changes how people watch movies or how movies are made. i really think much of that started with many a 70s disaster movie. when FX became a THING that was noticed and paid attention to. (wait... not just the 70s... 2001 had game-changing FX, it did.)

by the way, i *will* do a quiz, but it may take me a few days. house guests and whatnot. a wedding for friends tomorrow in bogalusa. chaos, etc.

Oh, absolutely. We can always appreciate the best from every period and judge it on its own terms. But ask yourself, when was the last time you were blown away by the latest FX? T2 for me.

i can tell ya when. i doubt a single person would agree with me, mwhaha, but that never stops me.

the movie was not some completely contrived nolan kinda deal.

it was gravity. yes, that flick with sandra bullock. the same director who did another fave of mine, children of men.

i thought gravity was indeed mind-blowing. i do not know how the huge majority of it was even filmed. awesome, is what it was.

game changer? i doubt it. cuz no one even talks about it. but it was incredible. in terms of movie-making? incredible.

2 is maybe krull?

p.s. continuing my earlier babble about FX in the modern era, the movie that takes the award for almost exclusively practical FX would be, hands down, mad max: fury road. how anyone in that cast survived making that movie, i will never know.
