"The Queen's Gambit" (2020)
NOW STREAMING: "The Queen's Gambit" (2020, Netflix) -- the new mini-series "The Queen's Gambit", which premiered on Netflix on October 23, was trending as #2 in Denmark today. So I thought I'd give it a go, it being only a mini-series. I believe we have a hit on our hands - it's absolutely riveting from the git go, with great performances all around, and interesting subject matter that really comes alive like never before, the royal game of chess. It's the fictional story of a nine year old prodigy at a strict girls' orphanage, who befriends a grumpy, reclusive janitor in order to learn about chess. If you think that sounds dull, wait till you see the skillful, fluid camerawork in the series. It draws you in and never lets go. Top marks.

This is the third time I've seen a recommendation of this show today. Sounds intriguing.
Where would rock 'n' roll be without feedback?

Based on a book written by the late Walter Tevis who also wrote the Hustler so I’m in.

I'd mostly heard that it was a bit rubbish, but fun. Maybe I'll have to watch it and come up with my own opinion for a change.
Bugger off.

I dunno if fun is the right word but it is somehow engaging.

WT also wrote The Man Who Fell to Earth.
First three eps of QG are very, very good.

It certainly has that magical '60's dust' (© Lee Mavers) which makes the whole thing look fabulous.
It also has the little drummer boy out of Love Actually in it which is a bit of a visual ear-worm (would that be an eye-worm then?) when watching it.
Give a shit or be a shit.

The little drummer boy out of Volker Schlöndorff's Tin Drum would have been better

The last episode was a bit over the top.

Yes, we’re really enjoying this, up to episode 4 at the moment. My wife doesn’t play chess, so is a bit puzzled at the moves. Not spoiling her enjoyment though.

Re: "The Queen's Gambit" (2020)
It's been praised for it's realistic chess matches but that's not how it strikes me. In the first couple of episodes a match would end when one player moved a rook to take the opposition queen or would pull out a check mate move, and the loser would look shocked.
Any half decent player would have seen those moves coming.
Apart from that, I'm enjoying it.
