1958

1958 may have been the best year for movies ever:

vertigo
the fly
touch of evil
cat on a hot tin roof
south pacific
bell book and candle
gigi
the reluctant debutante
the big country
the hidden fortress
elevator to the gallows
damn yankees
man of the west
the young lions
the defiant ones
the long hot summer
mon oncle
indiscreet
shadows
god's little acre
the magician
some came running
run silent run deep
the naked and the dead
thunder road
the left handed gun
i want to live!
ice cold in alex
queen of outer space
the lineup
bonjour tristesse
ashes and diamonds
rock-a-bye baby
the ballad of narayama
a time to love and a time to die
machine-gun kelly
cowboy
high school confidential
the key
le beau serge
party girl
the geisha boy
mädchen in uniform
the quiet american
brink of life
rally 'round the flag, boys!
the roots of heaven
the music room
the two-headed spy
the perfect furlough
terror in a texas town
montparnasse 19
lafayette escadrille
the wild woman of wongo
wind across the everglades
the last hurrah
the badlanders
kings go forth
darby's rangers
another time, another place
the H-man
gideon of scotland yard
stage struck
equinox flower
buchanan rides alone
the black orchid

Bell Book & Candle is one of my all time favorite movies.

Auntie Mame was left off the list .. :(

Some people argue that 1939 - Wizard of Oz, Gone with the Wind, etc - was the best - No time to look up a list as I have to take my dog to the vet for an operation on her rear leg. Fingers crossed she''ll be OK

Fingers crossed that she's okay.

Btw ~ 1939 is usually said to be the "best" year for movies but there are around a dozen flicks on the 1958 list that I like/enjoy.

1939 is the best year for Hollywood, the old studio system. Which was on the way out by 1958.

GM ~ I don't have a lot of time to respond right now but one difference between 1939 (the studio system and all else) and 1958 is that at that point most people had televisions in their homes in North America.
