Btw ~ 1939 is usually said to be the "best" year for movies but there are around a dozen flicks on the 1958 list that I like/enjoy.

1939 is the best year for Hollywood, the old studio system. Which was on the way out by 1958.

GM ~ I don't have a lot of time to respond right now but one difference between 1939 (the studio system and all else) and 1958 is that at that point most people had televisions in their homes in North America.

There are also a fair few foreign language movies in most lists for 58
