The Sequel is Better...

Postby Clip (round the ear) » 08 Jan 2025, 20:52

Over the last few days I've watched The Godfather and Godfather II - both excellent films.

It got me thinking, is II even better than the first...?

Maybe.

Maybe not

So, name a film (with a few lines) [ONE AT A TIME] where you think a sequel or sequels are better

Is Toy Story a contender...?

Equalizer [Denzel Washington]...?

"Carry on again doctor" :D
Seriously, though, I really rate "French Connection 2". Hackman is, as usual, superb.

Yes, a really good call and I agree

More disturbing then the first

Hackman, of course, is superb

People hate it, but I think the second Matrix movie is one of the best sequels of all time.
Where would rock 'n' roll be without feedback?

I've never been able to get into the Matrix series.

Perhaps this is a good time to give at least one another go

Beverly Hill Cops - I love that series.

I'm not saying it is better but the final/last one with all three of the big names ( Eddie Murphy, John Ashton, Judge Reinhold) - Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, is excellent and comes close - made 40 years after the first!

Interestingly, and sadly John Ashton died soon after its release

Humorously and prophetically his ill health is dramatised in the film a number of times - him on the treadmill barely at walking pace with his medication, double cheeseburger and bottle of beer on a table nearby...!

He died just 2 months after the USA release in 2024 :(

Spiderman 2 (Toby whassiface version) and Superman 2 are both better than the originals, but superhero films set a fairly low bar. Crashing the one film at a time rule there.

Btw, The Godfather Pt 2 always strikes me as a much harder slog of a film than the original. It might have more moments of significance, but the pacing is a bit off for me.
Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

A fair point but I like the way it flashes back and forwards from the Don as a young man

"wet my beak..."

Part 3 is dreadful
