Album: Exile

Song: Sympathy For The Devil

If it wasn't for Exile I don't think I'd particularly class myself as a Stones fan as no other album really does it for me. But they did write Exile so I love them for it.

Beggars Banquest is probably where they became an album band but despite some great highs I find it a inconsistent.

With Let It Bleed I can see why it is people's favourite but it is just too country for my tastes.

Sticky Fingers is very good but I find just that little bit self indulgent. It probably is the most Stonesy album because it tries to be a jack of all trades but ends up being not quite a master of any.

I'll throw Some Girls into the mix as well. God knows how they managed to pull it off but I think they did. It's probably not their second best album but it is the one I enjoy most after Exile, just because it is so fun.

Best Album; Sticky Fingers.
But it is indicitive of how good they are that there are about 6 second choices that are better than almost anything else ever recorded.
Best track;Clearly "Gimme Shelter" but "Sway","Moonlight Mile","Winter" and the live "Midnight Rambler" from Ya-Yas also come close.

Best Album: Exile On Main Street
Best Song: Gimme Shelter

Gimme Shelter still sends a shiver down my spine every time I hear it and I think that Exile is still the best album the band ever produced

How come the intro guitar parts sound wrong on every live version I've ever heard? What is it about that intro they they couldn't replicate live?

I saw the Stones in '99 and Keef fucked up that intro so spectacularly that Mick (who just happened to be in close up on the video screen at the time) gave him a look of amused/pained/embarrassed bemusement. Damn funny. They then went on to play an absolute snorter of a version, with Lisa Fisher's vocals getting pretty close to the original - which, as we all know, are the greatest backing vocals ever.

That might well be true, but it doesn't mean they shouldn't be. Generally though I would not assert that they are quite as good as Sympathy, Jumping, Satisfaction, Gimme Shelter, Wild Horses, Paint it black etc, but I do think the Stones' later stuff is underrated, and this seems to be because it is ctricised principally because it doesn't match up to their earlier stuff, not because it is not really that great. The only album since Somegirls which has hardly anything good on it is Voodoo Lounge - all the others have some tremendous songs, though note I do not claim they are full of tremendous songs. Also, as I hinted, I think the Stones' sense of humour is often underplayed, and the three songs mentioned are intentionally comic - and I quite like that in the Stones.

It is indeed astonishing how they could return to form in such a startling manner...before returning to being shit once again. Somone given the albums and not told the release dates would certainly be astonished to learn when some Girls was released. The second half is incredibly strong. And I've asked it before: why wasn't 'Before they mAKE Me Run' a single'? Fantastic....not least because we get Keef on lead vocals. 8-)

Can't You Hear Me Knocking meanders on too long, as if the band don't know where to take it.

Wild Horses is turgid and maudlin.

I Got The Blues is grating and whiney.

Where's Ray Bones to defend Exile??
