BCB 100 - REM

Postby geoffcowgill » 24 Jul 2006, 16:20

I'm frankly baffled that Document isn't routinely considered not only their finest but one of the five or ten best albums of the 80s. There's not a bad track on it, and several phenomenal ones. It manages to have a great deal of variety and remain sonically of a piece. It's one of those straddling transitional albums that I love (their Rubber Soul). Great great great great great.

My favorite song is from the following album, though. "Hairshirt" is one of the best songs about love I've ever heard, and it manages to avoid almost any cliched expression of the subject. The central metaphor is beautiful and, as far as I know, completely original. A stunning work, with pre-"Losing My Religion" mandolins and Stipe delivering his most transcendent, unfettered vocal.

Favorite Album - Document

Favorites Song - "Hairshirt"

A very difficult choice this, considering their history of top quality albums and songs.

Album: Document

Song: Radio Free Europe

Another three letter band with an E as the second, and consonants at either end, spring to mind.

That's funny you mention Document as I thought it was the first REM album I didn't really care for.

I still feel that way--but they released even less memorable efforts in the '90s so go figure.

I can see why people don't care for REM, because they are, at times, turgid. But when they get it right...... crikey, they can fly.

Album: In my all-time Top 10, so no surprises - Document
Song: Could choose a long, long list here, but the atmosphere on Oddfellows Local 151 gets me every time.

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but the last I heard you liked Rush.

Case dismissed.

Funny that I would say Oddfellows is amongst their most turgid, but there you go.

I can't believe Document is getting all this praise either - a workmanlike effort with a couple of highlights in my book.

Automatic, Country Feedback.
Only really rate the two 'selling-out' albums.

Bungo the Mungo

Postby Bungo the Mungo » 24 Jul 2006, 17:05

A fake band fronted by a humourless poser.

Their music sounds worse to me with every passing year.

Geoff - I'm not being funny, but are there any bands from this 100 list that you don't like?
