Yule's performance on 'New Age' vindicates him totally. Lou was right to leave the vocal to the little boy. It's disarmingly sweet.

And Lou's vocals on 'Loaded' prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that the man could actually sing. So as well as being an absolute cunt of the highest order, he's been short-changing his fans for decades with this half-arsed talky vocal that ruins all the great songs he wrote in his prime.

Correct on both counts.

Doug Yule handles 'innocent' vocals extremely well. 'Candy Says' upwards, his vocals are invariably disarmingly sweet.

And Lou could certainly sing in the normal sense of the word - it's evident right from the first track of their first album.

One thing I'm sure of with I'm Set Free is Sterling Morrison's guitar solo is one of his best. Sublime!

Question: where do they stand today? where would you rank them?

OK, I realise that to some, the question may seem pointless - they're a great band and we should all dig them and why pit them against others?....but it really interests me.

They're great, right? The meaning of the word is debased through overuse. They're great like the Stones or the Beatles. Really very very good.

In 1980 everybody namechecked 'em. These days nobody does. Certainly not up-and-coming bands. Why?

I love the Fall more than any other band, but I'd say the Velvet Underground are the greatest band of all time.

it's weird how carlsson has managed to get wilson over a barrel and then persuade him to let the rest of the PROG goons perform anal chugs on him in said position.

my point is that wilson has sold his arse cheaply. it's embarrassing to read.

Just look at Ted's face, John
I think he's listening to the Fall.

Pretty high I would say. They do have an reputation of respectability, though. Even people who haven't heard them tend to have a good impression. They added a tonne of character to pop music and were, perhaps, the first truly urban band.

They're great, right? The meaning of the word is debased through overuse. They're great like the Stones or the Beatles. Really very very good.

They're not nearly of the level of consistency as The Beatles and neither were they as ambitious or as capable as The Who.

The Velvets released three flat-out terrific albums with an utter bum record in between, but 'Loaded' (brilliant as it is) is a record by a band which has run its course. They simply lacked the chops to take it any further. There's not a single new musical idea in the whole of that album. It's a summary record.

In 1980 everybody namechecked 'em. These days nobody does. Certainly not up-and-coming bands. Why?

Because namechecking means nothing. If the last generation namechecked Soundgarden, this generation will namecheck ABBA just to not be like the old lot. It's one of those terribly annoying things that bands do.

I love the Fall more than any other band, but I'd say the Velvet Underground are the greatest band of all time.

Oh dear.

:D

We'll both lay into him, Jeff. Hard. For 17 minutes and 27 seconds.

Get me?

I'll be in the Who's corner.
I don't think I'll have too much of a problem with John and Jeff.
Unless I'm drunk, then it'll be a fair fight.

You think that your John Wayne avatar and persistant posting of Ted Nugent album covers is gonna scare me? Ha!

I was gonna vote for the Velvets as the best band ever but when I consulted my Rolling Stone bible they did indeed say it was the Who.

Are you sure? I thought it was the band that played on Mick Jagger's solo albums.

No, silly--it was The Band that played on Mick Jagger's solo albums.
They're Rolling Stone approved too.

Thank you, Chris. It's a great song. Nice to hear just that bit of it!

In answer to John's question, I'd personally rate VU at about #10, that is, my 10th favorite artist. No idea how they rate with the public or other musicians these days.

Well, you can't say Doug Yule's in that clip.

If it wasn't for The Murder Mystery, the Velvet Underground would be 100% perfect.

By the way, I don't know if it is just me that never noticed it, but playing the first album on my iPod yesterday, fuck me if I didn't notice Nico IS actually in there on Sunday Morning - wordless "ahhhs" deep in the mix in the last minute or so.
Complete Prince Mp3 set - on a purple usb drive - available in the usual place if anyone wants it
