Favorite album: Squeeze
........................(actually it's White Light/White Heat )

Favorite song: "There She Goes Again" or "Sister Ray" (depending on my mood.)
You'd pay big bucks to know what you really think.

I do love the band, after taking a chance on getting into them a couple of years ago. I'm not too familiar with the band politics (though reading this thread has enlightened me somewhat...) but the music is what matters to me. I enjoy everything they've done. The favourite album is the debut, but I couldn't tell you a song. There are too many.

I love Heard Her Call My Name and Sister Ray, but I think they both die on their arses when the bass drops out (about three quarter's way through both)....Is there better versions out there than the WL/WH takes?

Fantastic.

Altho' I thought that was the Velvet Underground, Pete?

At least we're in agreement about something, anyway.

Either the Clash or Velvet Underground, you're correct.

How can a devout rock & roll fan such as yourself not appreciate something like What Goes On?

I simply don't know TC.

The VU are a total mystery to me - I've never liked anything I've heard by them. Maybe someday it will 'click' - but I consider that prospect unlikely, in all honesty.

It was the most disappointing moment of my life as a music fan.
Lou was lazy and quite obviously didn't want to be there.
He drawled the words to the songs - tossed them off like so much garbage - and spent the entire show glaring at cale/the audience. He seemed ok with mo and stirling, but he was hardly chummy even with them.

I saw them at Glastonbury and thought they were ace - presumably Lou got laid the night before or something.

The bit in 'I Heard Her Call My Name' where the bass drops out is clearly deliberate, and there's this lovely raw tinny section, then the bass comes in again all whooping and hollering and it's fucking magical!

I hate Doug Yule's weedy voice and I have no interest in most of the songs on Loaded.
He added nothing to the VU - especially as a replacement foil to Lou - and you only have to look at Squeeze to see the extent of his talents.

I think Doug Yule sings quite beautifully on 'Candy Says' myself.

Album: 'Velvet Underground'
Song: 'Stephanie Says'

Favourite Album: Loaded.

Favourite Song: Beginning to see the light, there she goes again or maybe who loves the sun.

As for the first couple with their 3rd and 4th albums, I have to say I used to like the first two better but then i have leaned to the latter two nowadays..

The first two are groundbreaking, the first record alone should be studied by anyone who wants to know anything about music...

White Light/White Heat is raw and gutteral, hits you where it should right in the groin and watches you enjoy it while you are on the floor writhing in pain. When i was in university and these two records gave me the fuck you attitude to everything that has held me good stead till now.

That said, I am growing older, Self-titled loaded are mellow, cool and well FUCKING COOL....

All i can say, the FUCK YOU is still there but the melodies catch you as do the hooks....

That is the song for which I would happily kill him.
I couldn't hate it more if Baez was singing it.

I'm no Doug Yule apologist. I see him as a nonentity more than out-right hate him. Apparently, the 'official' reason given for him singing several songs on the 3rd LP and Loaded was that Lou's voice was shot from touring. My 'official' reasoning is Lou didn't think he had a radio friendly voice and by having Yule sing the pretty songs would increase their chances of getting airplay. Of course, he was wrong and radio still ignored them.

It was years before I realized that wasn't Lou Reed singing "Candy Says."

My view of him too - like I say, I hate Reed for making Yule the lead singer, not Yule.
If Lou had come up to me and asked me to play bass and sing with the VU I would have fucking leapt at the chance. Even though I am even shitter than Doug Yule at singing and playing the bass.

I don't blame Doug, I just think he is fucking rubbish.
But I do hate the mimsy way he launches off that third album with that fucking shit performance.
You don't start an album (and especially a VU album with candy Says - you start it with Beginning to See the Light or What Goes On.
Or better still you don't fire John Cale and you begin it with Hey Mr Rain.

You don't think Yule sounds just a little like Lou Reed on that track?
