BCB 100 - The Replacements

Postby geoffcowgill » 04 Jul 2006, 17:16

Here's a band I really like and yet hate almost all of the bands they obviously inspired. What was it that made them work? It must be Westerberg's writing, no?

Everyone raves about Let It Be, but it just sounds too sketchy in places for me. "Answering Machine" is one of their best, but even a 'classic' like "Unsatisfied" just sounds unfinished. Pleased To Meet Me is my favorite. Maybe it's too slick, too un-Matsy for some, but every song is at the least very good, and many are amazing. "Can't Hardly Wait" is the one, though, a legitimate classic. It even got used as a movie title  .

Yes, more or less. I don't attach that much importance to them and don't regard them as a seminal or truly great band but they were the best at what they did and wrote some wonderful songs.
Album: Let It Be, which is patchy and shaky but packed with charm and exuberance. Even the Kiss cover works.
Song: Left of the Dial. Probably their most commercial moment but the best song anyway.

Yow! I sure do like these guys. Saw them play twice- one show was a great howlingly-hilarious drunken abortion and the second was a stellar set of selections from Let It Be with selected earlier songs in the mix.

Album: Let It Be

Song: (happy Mats) "I Will Dare"
(sad Mats) "Here Comes A Regular"
You'd pay big bucks to know what you really think.

I remember when I first heard them, what a revelation they were- here were a band that really represented everything great about the punk era- nothing special as musicians or singers, they got by on enthusiasm, energy, and an unbridled love of all forms of music. They were amateurish in all the right ways- they'd jump from a tight little Westerberg pop gem to a Kiss cover to minute and a half punk song to a jazzy version of the theme song for the US Marines, all short, sharp, and with little break in between. In the early to mid 80s, they were a breath of fresh air, and enjoyed the hell out of them the numerous times I saw them live.

To me they became inconsistent when people started telling Westerberg his songs were significant - not that they weren't, but their casualness were part of the joy, and they lost it at some point. I think Let it Be and Tim are incredibly overrated, though Pleased to Meet Me is probably where they pulled themselves together the best.

Album - Hootenany (where I came in) or Pleased to Meet Me

Song - Probably something silly and tossed-off like "Red Light."

Don't be ridiculous. A doyens club membership is not so easily lost, or won. I maintain my position on this worthy but drab bunch of losers, and will tolerate no further debate on my future within the doyens club.

i don't actually dislike them these days but they are certainly hopelessly overrated, especially by americans. they do largely bore me, yeah, but i can find some enjoyment in let it be when i'm in the mood.

I actually prefer Paul's solo material to the Replacements proper, but I have a hard time understanding how one could hear tracks like I'll Be You and not be won over by their unpretentious brand of rock and roll.

Can I just add that I find them tediously uninteresting too - even worse than a Springsteen solo acoustic album, if that's possible.
