BCB 100 - The Faces/Rod Stewart

Eight pretty great albums in, what, five years? And then...
The only Faces album I have is Long Player, but I've got the box. It's probably cheating, but I'm picking that as favorite album. Speaking of which, how is the phenomenal "Tell Everyone" not on that sucker? Three versions of "Miss Judy's Farm" and no "Tell Everyone"? In general I think I prefer those soul ballad songs from Rod and Faces. "Open To Ideas" is another great one. My favorite track is probably the cover of "Mama, You've Been On My Mind" from Never A Dull Moment. Next to Hendrix's "Watchtower", that's probably my favorite Dylan cover. Just beautiful.
Favorite Album - Five Guys Walk Into A Bar...
Favorite Song - "Mama, You've Been On My Mind"

I really like a lot of their stuff but I cant really listen to much of that Faces box in one go and keep interested. I think I prefer early solo Rod, even though it was often the same musicians. I like all the Ballads, Rod sing them so well. Mandolin Wind is a sublime song but I would be trying to look cool and different if I didn't straightforwardly admit that the best Rod and or Faces song is Maggie Mae.

The Faces were very good but Rod's first four solo albums had an attention to detail that raised them to a different level. Years of crap after that early seventies fertile period have undermined just how great he was in the eyes of many. Just focus on his good stuff though and there is some of the best music ever made.
Album - Every Picture Tells a Story, but Gasoline Alley or Never A Dull Moment are nearly as good.
Tracks - impssible to choose just one
Stuff he wrote - Maggie May, You Wear It well, Mandolin Wind
Covers - Tomorrow is A Long Time, Country Comfort, Reason To Believe

I think I prefer Ronnie Lane's contribution to the Faces and subsequent history to Rod Stewart's, but the early Mercury Rod stuff is great and so was this band. Maybe nobody else but Zep had their swagger at their peak.
Can't possibly pick a best album, though for Rod solo it's probably Every Picture Tells a Story.
Best song similarly tough, but since Shagger Dave put Pool Hall Richard on his Nashville comp, that's the one that I've been listening to a lot. So let's call it that.

This is really tough to choose.
So I am going to split my choices (if you can cheat by selecting a box set, Cowgill, so can I).
Faces:
Song: Debris
Album Ooh La La
Rod:
Song: Mandolin Wind (but it could have been ten others - including all his Dylan covers)
Album: Never A Dull Moment

Album - Ooh La La
Song - Every Picture Tells A Story, Cindy Incidentally
The greatest band EVER to listen to whilst drinking large quantities of beer.

For me Old Raincoat/Gasoline Alley are the real McCoy. I do like Every Picture/Never A Dull Moment but those first two albus are something else.

Was there ever any talk of Bob Dylan suing them for this?

I seem to be in the minority of prefering the Faces albums to Rod's solo albums. There is something a bit more innocent and playful with the Faces albums, plus you get Ronnie Lane songs, and like Mike Boom says they sound great while lots of beer is being consumed.... Oh, and they came up with the greatest ever intro to a song with Stay With Me.
Fave album - Ooh la la
Song - That's all you need.

I've not got any Faces stuff.
I've got the 'Small Faces' compilation.
They formed the Faces right? Or am I wrong? Where did Rod come in?

Steve Marriot left, leaving a band without a lead guitarist and singer. In stepped Ronnie Wood and Rod Stewart and the band evolved into The Faces. I guess this was around 69/70

Do they sound at all like the Small Faces? Better?

They sound like what the Small Faces would have sounded like had they lasted into the 1970's
I.e. rockier, blusier and folkier. Less poppier.

I love (and I mean LOVE) when Lane and Stewart sing together.
The bridge ("I went down and back - just to see how far it was..") when the two voices come in together send shivers up me.
They do it a fair bit on Ooh La la which was why it is my favourite Faces album, depite my fave song coming from A Nod.
