BCB 100 - David Bowie

Postby geoffcowgill » 24 Jun 2006, 17:26

If it wasn't for that not-very-good "Let's Spend The Night Together", I think I'd pick Aladdin Sane as my favorite.

Favorite Album - The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars

Favorite Song - "Ashes To Ashes"

Favourite Album - Station To Station

Favourite Song - Rebel Rebel

'Station To Station' was one of the last Bowie albums I picked up when working through the back catalogue - as I recall this was simply down to it having the smallest number of tracks - there's logic! It quickly established itself as a favourite and to this day it's the album of his that I turn to most frequently. There's something very engaging about it as a whole unit of work - despite consisting of some very different styles.

As for choosing 'Rebel Rebel', it never fails to excite me as a tune and it sounds as fresh now as it ever has.

"Heroes" is only truly great for its first half. Then his histrionic, strangled-seal vocal really threatens to ruin the whole bloody shebang.

Bowie's greatest career-long crime is to underestimate the power of restraint - especially with his vocals.

Bollocks! If he didn't go over the top it wouldn't be Bowie. That's kind of the point of a lot of it, that it's so noticeable and affected. It's never understated when overblown will do just as well, yet he never goes too far. He always makes sure not to overplay the campiness or histrionics at the expense of the song. And there are plenty of occasions when he keeps things cool.

Yeah, I like the strangled-seal part in "Heroes" the best.

I see what you're saying, but he misjudges too often. As with "Heroes" - there's no need to yell from the rooftops with a sentiment so universal and so simple. He gets it right in the first half, and then he spoils it. As he does with half of 'Hunky Dory' and songs like 'Rock And Roll Suicide'. It's toe-curling.

the BCB 100 idea has been a success in getting people talking about music again, although Bowie is one artist where there has been no shortage of talk recently. here are my views anyway:

Album - Hunky Dory
Track - Heroes

the slider is right about "let's spend the night together," by the way. that record is perfect.

I still say it's Ziggy but thinking a lot about Aladdin Sane now.

Of course it's Ziggy!

It's of a piece. Aladdin Sane is great - magical in parts, even - but doesn't have the focus of Ziggy. The whole concept thing works with that album - you enter a world, it kind of lives on in you long after listening. I always got the feeling that, good as it is, Aladdin Sane is Ziggy's leftovers. A jumble.

Album: Ziggy Stardust

Song: For me, I just can't get over the crashing cinemagraphic effect of hearing Bowie tear into "Life on Mars." It's a life affirming moment!
You read that in a book, didn't you?!
