BCB 100 - Led Zeppelin

Postby geoffcowgill » 20 Jun 2006, 16:12

I typically say that Houses of the Holy is my favorite album of theirs, but I might have to change that to Physical Graffiti. About half of Houses is my favorite stuff Zeppelin ever did, "Over the Hills and Far Away", "The Ocean", "The Song Remains the Same", and "The Crunge". Seriously. But 'D'yer Maker" is really hard to ignore on an album of only eight songs. I'll come back to this.

"Ramble On" used to be my favorite, then "Over the Hills...", now I'm not sure.

Hmm.

As good as any other band of the '70s. And certainly as consistent for the first half of the decade anyway.

II is one of my favourite albums of all time. III and IV are good too. I'm still getting into Houses of the Holy but I enjoy it mostly.

Favourite track is probably Heartbreaker.

To date:

Album: Physical Graffitti

Song: "Over the Hills and Far Away", which is quickly being edged by "In My Time of Dying" but is still holding its own.

Either II, III or IV depending what day it is, whether I've had a bath or not or what colour socks I've got on. I'll say II today because I'm listening to it right now and it's glorious.

Album: II

Track:

Black Dog
Four Sticks
Going To California
When The Levee Breaks
What Is And What Should Never Be
The Lemon Song
Heartbreaker
Ramble On
Friends
That's The Way

Great band, though I didn't think so when they were together. Hated them in high school, probably as a rebellious thing against how expected it was to like them. But when the expectations fell away, I heard them for what they are, and realized how impossibly tight and propulsive a rhythm section they had, how instinctive (and influenced by all the same British folk stuff I loved) a guitarist Page was, and how intimate an experience they could create in a 30,000 seat stadium. Plant's sort of the weak link- don't always love his singing, and the lyrics are often silly- but in the mid 70's, they just had so much swagger- Plant included- that you had to believe they were the best rock & roll band in the world if only because they acted like it. That live DVD that came out a few years ago really turned me around- they owned the stage like nobody else.

Favorite album - Physical Graffiti
Favorite song - Communication Breakdown or Good Times, Bad Times

But how can anyone listen to this and keep a straight face?

All that stuff about having his lemon squeezed and the juice running down his leg? It'd be quite funny if it was by, I dunno, Julian Clary, or even Julian Cope, come to think of it. Or David Lee Roth! Yes! that would be fantastic!

But Percy's version is preposterous and he doesn't seem to realise it.

I guess I just can't help but find Led Zeppelin, well, silly, really.

Sorry. I realise I'm in a minority of one. I'll leave this thread alone now!

Plant didn't write that line. It's from an old Robert Johnson tune.

Favorite album: Presence. Even though I'm on the third or fourth copy of every one (except In Through the Out Door and Coda), this is the only one that stays fresh for me.

Favorite song: In My Time of Dying, beating out The Ocean and When the Levee Breaks, which mainly just rock. In My Time of Dying packs more of Zeppelin's qualities in one song than any other. It doesn't hit on their folk leanings, but everything else it does. It does the slow blues, rocks, builds dynamics and shows off their ensemble playing better than any other.

I'm hard pressed to give one album as a favourite. It's like saying "Do you prefer your right big toe, your left ear or your bellybutton? Pah, they're different but .. you know what I mean. I can't possibly, possibly choose between any of the first seven albums.

Anyway, I've been called to the land of nod, will edit this tomorrow.

Too bad The Carpenters never did a version of it.

I'll happily listen to any of their studio albums and thoroughly enjoy it even In Through The Out Door, which I actually rate higher than Presence.

Favourite song. One from each album:
Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You
Ramble On
That's The Way
Battle Of Evermore
Over The Hills And Faraway
Ten Years Gone
Achilles Last Stand
In The Evening
Hey, Hey What Can I Do
