A genuinely brilliant player. Winner of goal of the season in consecutive years, he will be forever linked with a picture of four Norwich defenders facing each other while he, several yards away, pops the ball into the net.
However he had ankles of glass, which meant he did not achieve as much as his skill deserved.

I kept thinking "swim as far as you can, swim as far as you can".

At one time I thought he was destined for greatness. A magnificent first touch and great vision. The injuries never allowed that talent to blossom - great shame.

I loved watching him play. Best player for England since Gascoigne at the time, but his time was so short-lived.
His lifestyle probably didn’t help.

Now coaching at Arsenal which is great to see.
On a similar note I was surprised the other day to see Daniel Sturridge is still only 32, but has just had his contract cancelled by Perth Glory.
It can be amazing how swiftly top players careers can fall.

I was wondering what had become of Sturridge. He was a great buy for Liverpool and hit the ground running when he arrived, scoring every game it seemed, then later developing a brilliant partnership with Saurez. He noticeably dropped off in his last couple of seasons though after Saurez departed.
