Exceptional circumstances - I think he had to bowl him as much as he did. But, in the future, I agree. He has certainly added a new dimension.

No Steve Smith for the 3rd Test. As the teams are evenly matched with Smith being the difference I fully expect an England victory in a low scoring game.

Even if England win from here, 50-6 in a session is shit.

Words fail me.

Mind you, I believe I did say before the 1st Test that I thought we would get hammered. 3-1 may have been a little optimistic though.

Excellent from Root and Denly. Showed application that was so incredibly missing in the 1st innings (and so often at other times in recent years).

We should. We almost certainly won't get it but we are in with a chance. If Root & Stokes can see off the new ball... and get us to 150 behind with 7 intact... then the Aussies will start to worry a bit.

I think Denly has shown enough to be opening next Test - Roy has to drop to four. Burns did enough in the first Test to persevere but really needs to work on the short stuff.

If Anderson is back next Test then it's clearly Woakes making way for him. Root obviously doesn't fancy him.

Well anything is possible I suppose but the 2/1 odds against England with Ladbrokes are quite ridiculous and obviously don’t reflect the real chances of a victory.

True chances are something like 12/1 in my opinion, probably bigger than that.

These run chases just don’t come off, especially with a batting line up as fragile as ours. Yes we showed some balls yesterday which was good to see but recent history shows that the next collapse is inevitably just around the corner and whilst we can hope, I fear it may happen this morning when the new ball comes along.

These things just don’t happen from that position.

The joy that cricket can bring, the ringing in the ears that comes from the delirium of celebration (or is it just blood pressure ramping up?), life just doesn’t get much better than these 2 victories that Ben Stokes has brought to us this summer.

Blow hard and recover for Old Trafford, carrying this momentum with you guys.

Never in doubt :D

Superlatives really can't describe that. Those of us lucky enough to see it on the TV today were very, very privileged. Those who were at the ground itself have just had a sporting day for the ages. Truly remarkable innings under the most extreme pressure.

In the cold light of day, Tim Payne must bear quite a bit of the responsibility for the Aussies defeat - the refusal to try and cut the single off on the fifth ball was sensible earlier on, but inexcusable towards the end. And the decision to review what could never in a hundred years be an LBW was mind boggling, and cost them the game. That being said, the not out for the Stokes LBW by Joel Wilson was utterly horrendous. How he doesn't think that is hitting the stumps is frankly incredible.

Now we need to get the England batting order sorted out, and that cannot include Roy opening. It may not include him at all, but I could make a case for him in the middle order. I think Denly has earnt the right to open and has ten days to work on the short pitched stuff.

As for bowling, I think Anderson (providing he is fit) for Woakes is a no brainer.

All in all, a great Test match and sets the series up nicely - I'm not sure who I fancy most, but I think we may have two further gereat games, weather permitting.

I wonder how Nathan Lyons feels this morning when he thinks back to that run out that he messed up?

I disagree. Woakes had an average test, but he has been superb for England this last year. With bat and ball.
Anderson is still a gamble fitness-wise especially after he broke down so early in the Lords game when ostensibly fit.
If it happens again, we lose the Ashes.
Okay, its an Old Trafford test, and he'll be bowling from a stand with his name on it but its something to consider, and def not a no-brainer.

Woakes has taken 9 for 251 in the series so far. Ave of 27.9. Not too shabby actually.

Broad has taken 14 for 355, Ave 25.4

Again I'm not saying otherwise. I merely saying that Root has used him very sparingly in the last Test and a half.... not much point in picking a guy you're going to only use as an occasional bowler.

And I wasn’t suggesting you were wrong, just interested in those numbers so looked ‘em up. :D

Bit concerned about Root’s use of the bowlers. Broad, Archer and Stokes certainly haven’t let the captain down but have been overworked at times, certainly the latter 2 and somewhere along the line that is quite likely to have an impact on their body and performance.

At least we have a decent squad of quicks at the moment I suppose!

I see that Jimmy Anderson has now been ruled out of the final 2 tests with a calf injury. In a way I'm kind of thankful as I had this fear that they would bring him back before he was totally ready and then him go and get injured after 4 overs again. At least the uncertainty has now gone.

I wonder if we will see England's highest wicket taker play Test cricket again?
