So after a couple of seasons of VAR, I think the authorities should bin it. It was not introduced to disallow goals for fingernail offsides, or accidental handballs. VAR is clearly overreaching its mandate. It should be up the refs on the pitch.

However, I think they should also introduce a slate of other rules to help referees, along the lines of the following:
Referees (including assistants) must give the benefit of the doubt to the attacking team;
All players are required to enable the referee to make the correct decision and failure to do so will be punished at a later date (so players are expected not to dive, or to tell the ref the ball came of them for a throw-in, or tell the ref the ball crossed the line, and failure to do so will be reviewed by a panel);
A rule that players from the team against whom a decision has been given must immediately retreat 10 yards from the incident (so they can't stand over the ball) - there is some rule like this in rugby union;
Only the captain of a team can talk to the ref unless the ref asks to speak to a player (so players cannot surround the ref arguing).
I would also like a rule that a panel will review every game (you could start with just the premier league) and fine clubs £100,000 for every infringement of the rules (like shirt-pulling at corners). After a couple of weeks of huge fines owners would ensure their managers made sure their players kept their hands to themselves.

I am not insisting on these specifically, but along these lines. There appears now to be a culture that it is okay to set out to deceive refs - this should be reversed.
I kept thinking "swim as far as you can, swim as far as you can".

VAR has ensured that more correct decisions are given in key moments of a game, but yes, it's way overreached now. And bizarrely, as a result, is ending up with incorrect overruling of correct on-field decisions.

It pisses me off that refs don't have the balls (when appropriate) to stick with original decisions when sent over to the monitor. Has it ever happened?

£100k for shirt-pulling is probably a little on the harsh side but I agree with your sentiments!

Oh, that passed me by. Good for him.

Although I should ask, was he correct to do so? :D

Really this is a side issue to VAR, but I threw it in there as I was thinking about rule changes I would like to see. But yes, it has to harsh to get the owners to pay attention - and it would also apply to stealing yards at throw-ins, keepers taking too long to release the ball etc etc. Any infringement. As I say after a couple of weeks of massive fines the game would be played properly.

Yep, I’ve been saying for years, all the unattractive traits of the game would be so easy to fix.

So it looks like Potter to Chelsea. I suppose it is unquestionably a step up for him, and I hope he is a success as he seems an alright guy. I can’t help thinking he won’t have as much fun as he would at Brighton.

:D Looking good.

Whereas my lot - 3 weeks ago I was saying Paul Ince had done an amazing job in sorting out the crap, and had compiled a pretty decent squad for no money, with freebies and loanees (due to financial restrictions) - excellent from him.

Since then he has sent out a team in 3 successive games with odd selections and (seemingly) with instructions to sit back and soak it up, then hit on the break when we have bog-all pace up front to make that viable.

Last night was a terrible performance. Apart from anything else, time-wasting from minute 1 is just horrible to see. We went 2 up at Swansea (no mean performance you'd think) against the run of play and utterly undeserved, due to 2 defensive mishaps.

And yet even from that start I was still confident we would lose because of what I was seeing, which of course we did, with barely a whimper.

When we played Blackburn we were really good - and in other games when we have played on the front foot, pressing and harrying the opposition, we have done well. And it took us to the Top 3 for a few weeks. Why the hell we would change that is beyond me.

Football eh?

Weird Championship fact - Coventry who are bottom, have lost 2 fewer games than Blackburn who are top.

Fantastic fact. It is draws which kill you.

[Edit]
Now I have actually looked at the table it is nothing like as fantastic as I thought it was.

A fact is a fact. :D

Yes, they've played 5 fewer games but still...

Also, only 1 team has lost more games than Blackburn.
