Do we need to talk about Tokyo ?

Postby Samoan » 09 Jul 2021, 22:45

Because I'm nonplussed.

(- Meantime, my summer sporting following has been the wonderful Wimbledon 2021, following the organisers canny Covid deferral of it in 2020, which concludes with the women's and men's finals this weekend and my studiously avoiding the football event although I think I'll feel obliged to watch it on Sunday.)

Going ahead now without spectators. Sounds like it's going to be a bit of a washout.

Anything that is not another effing Netflix/Amazon/etc etc series will have my attention - and no fans just makes it better for me, can anyone really have got pleasure out of watching 60k fans at Wembley last night? To me it was incredibly unnerving watching people willingly and gladly infect each other with a deadly virus.

Actually it all seems to be going nicely, taking into account drop-outs when soneone tests positive. Some fantastic races in the pool, the curious spectacle of skateboarding, that Austrian winning the cycling road race from the front eyc etc.

One of my son’s best pals is Tom Dean, who is in the final of the 200mtrs freestyle tonight.

I used to give him lifts to training when he was a young teenager and I’ve been predicting he would win an Olympic medal since he was 14.

A really nice young man, very laid back and extremely bright.

This could be a year early as he has only really burst onto the international stage in the last 18 months but his development has been awesome to witness.

Come on Little Tommy Dean!!!

Early to bed, alarm set.

Fantastic!

Though quite why so many UK medal winners are called "Tom" I haven't fathomed.

I'm sorry to be missing one of my favourite sports, the men's and women's Triathlons due to the time difference, but them's the breaks.
Georgia Taylor-Brown won silver early this morning and Alex Yee took the men's silver yesterday.

Brilliant celebrations in Tom Dean's family's back garden.

My son's in there.

I really enjoyed the first ever Olympics 3x3 men’s basketball tournament final. What a great sport. Latvia beat Russia (or whatever they're calling themselves these days) to the gold.

Yes I love it and I think it is the type of sport the Olympics should have in it- the games played on the street.

In the last 46 years the 400mtr Hurdles world record has come down by 0.75 seconds.

Today it came down by another 0.76 seconds.

So it looks as if Simone Biles is just about to compete on the beam.
I was thinking at the weekend the poor lass should maybe go home - it's no good for her mental health waiting around watching What Might Have Been.

Quite frankly, I find women's gymnastics daft with the sparkly gelled hair, bows and ribbons, vibrant makeup and sequined leotards and their performance style can be technically accomplished but wooden. I miss the natural elegance of the Soviet Russian and Eastern European countries competitors and their daring and beautiful routines - Nadia Comaneci and Olga Korbut to mention two who are unforgettable.

I've enjoyed the Olympics, but it annoys me so much how the NBC focuses so much on U.S. athletes. When somebody says the word 'twisties' one more time in my presence I swear I'd punch that person in the face, regardless of sex, race or religion. Sifan Hassan is the queen of track & field with 2 golds and a bronze, but she was hardly mentioned or shown. NBC is almost as chauvinistic as the British tabloids.
There's a big difference between kneeling down and bending over
