Looking at the useful Mac list here I note it's fairly out of date.
I've just got a MacBook and would be interested in any ESSENTIAL programs I should download (CD burning/maintaince etc).
I am totally new to Apple computing, so would appreciate any guidance.

Toast for burning/copying media. There may be freeware that does the same thing...
Handbrake is essential for file conversion.
Gemini, for eliminating dupes.
Onyx has a good rep for maintenance. I'm not sure it's essential though.

Disk Warrior also has a good rep for disk maintenance, but it's pricey.
I use Chronosyncbor making clones. Useful when I put in an SSD last month.

If you're new to Mac stuff get David Pogue's 'Missing Manual'.

Ta.
RealPlayer for Mac.
I have a Macbook up at my school in the mountains and my remote modem sets a monthly time limit on my video viewing and it is slow. What I do now is make copies of videos at home on my MacMini using RealPlayer, drop the files into a thumb drive and watch them at my leisure at school or while traveling.
One problem I find - and maybe you know how to fix this - is that the RealPlayer downloader automatically opens up for some streaming sites and not others. YouTube is one where it doesn't open and I wonder how to transfer YouTube videos to a file enabling me to watch them later without an internet connection.
Question authority.

RealPlayer! Why?
You have a mac so why not use Quicktime?
As for your YouTube, use this site
